The brothers learned to play mandolin, fiddle, and guitar and to sing old songs from their mother and her brother Uncle Pen. Their parents died when Bill was ten, and Charlie and Birch headed north looking for work while Bill lived with Uncle Pen. Bill continued to play old-time dance music with his uncle; "We used to ride mule and play for square dances around the county." Bill picked up a range of influences during this time, learning to play the blues on the fiddle and guitar from Arnold Schultz and practicing Sacred Harp and sharp-note singing in churches. Extractions: Born in 1911 in Rosine, Kentucky, Bill Monroe grew up in a family of amateur musicians. Taking up mandolin, he started his professional music career in a duo with his brother Charlie. The Monroe Brothers sang about sin and redemption with ethereal, haunting harmonies, the music reflecting the hardscrabble lives of their rural audience. After the brothers split up in 1938, Bill formed His Blue Grass Boys and in the process created bluegrass, a hybrid of old-timey string music, gospel, blues and mandolin-driven hoedown music. A brilliant songwriter, Monroe developed a repertoire featuring classics like his home state homage "Blue Moon of Kentucky"; his heartfelt paean to the relative who encouraged his music, "Uncle Pen"; and his supercharged version of Jimmie Rodgers' "Muleskinner Blues." Monroe's distinctive tenor personified the high lonesome sound of mountain music. Unfortunately, being a workaholic, my idea of recreation is to write a gonzo Pearl instead of cranking out yet another high falutin' economistic development-jargon laden document. To facilitate the endeavor, I have opted for a creativity soundtrack featuring Muddy Waters alternating with Bill Monroe under the headphones while allowing my fingers to roam about the keyboard, aided and abetted by random free associations generated from some odd corner of a now-presumably mature hillbilly intellect full of residual memories and burdened by an acute and growing awareness of human mortality and the fact that everything always ends up coming full circle. Yep, it's one of those Pearls. In keeping with my protestations about heavy lifestyle demands in the previous Pearl, 'tis time for yet another spontaneous gonzolic ramble.
