One cannot underestimate the tremendous political and cultural impact that South African entertainers and writers have had both in their native land and in the international community of artists and activists. For decades, as White South Africans thumbed their noses at diplomatic efforts to end apartheid, it was the country's performers, playwrights and novelists - most of them banished to platforms in exile - who helped galvanize world support against the oppressive Afrikaner regime. Following the example of African-American artist/activists like Harry Belafonte, South African artists such as jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela, singer Miriam Makeba, pianist Abdullah Ibrahim (also known as Dollar Brand), actor Zakes Mokae and producer/playwright Mbongeni Ngema wisely and effectively used their time on the stages of the world to keep the plight of Black South Africans in the international spotlight. And the works they've produced, songs and stories of the hope and joy in their homeland as well as the pain and struggle, have expanded the cultural vocabulary with rich new sounds; sounds that - while influenced heavily by Black Americans - are distinctively South African.

Robinson is well known to Miss Daisy, August Wilson and London audiences Wednesday, December 04, 2002 By Christopher Rawson, Post-Gazette Drama Critic "I drove Miss Daisy twice before," says Roger Robinson, who does a feeling performance as Hoke, the chauffeur, in "Driving Miss Daisy" at the Pittsburgh Public Theater. Roger Robinson takes the wheel as chauffeur Hoke Coleburn in the Pittsburgh Public Theatre production of "Driving Miss Daisy." (Martha Rial, Post-Gazette) That was 12 years ago. "They were both wonderful ladies," he says. "Well, all three have been wonderful," he adds, including Rosemary Prinz, his current co-star. Robinson decided to do the play again because now, age 62, he better matches Hoke, who ages from 60 to 85 in the play. "I'm closer to my own mortality. I think I'm better this time around." But the main difference is that Robinson's mother, 92, who lives in Seattle, has recently declined into dementia, "so the play resonates for me." Miss Daisy ages from 72 to 97, and Robinson speaks of the journey the two take into friendship, finding it remarkable they can do that even in old age. He recalls the play's final image of Hoke feeding Daisy a piece of pie and as he does, his eyes fill with tears at emotion remembered from both play and life.

The Serpent and the Rainbow: A Harvard Scientists Astonishing Journey into the Secret Societies of Haitian Voodoo, Zombies, and Magic Cast Bill Pullman (Dennis Alan), Cathy Tyson (Marielle Duschamps), Zakes Mokae (Dargent Peytraud), Brent Jennings (Luis Mozart Muldaur), Paul Winfield (Lucien Celine), Conrad Roberts (Christophe Duran), Michael Gough (Eric Steinbauer) Plot Harvard anthropologist Dennis Alan is hired by a pharmaceuticals company to go to Haiti and find the drug used in voodoo rituals to create zombies. With the aid of a Haitian psychologist, Alan searches for the elusive proof of an actual zombie and the drug. His quest takes him deep inside the Haitian voodoo religion where he encounters many disturbing things. But he also attracts the attention of Dargent Peytraud, the Minister of Secret Police and a practicing houngan , who brutally tortures Alan and then has him buried alive. The story behind The Serpent and the Rainbow The book passed through several hands as a film property and eventually ended up in those of Wes Craven. Cravens name is most certainly at the forefront of horror directors. Craven first established a name for himself in the 1970s with shock and brutality classics like The Last House on the Left (1972) and The Hills Have Eyes (1977). After several uncertain moves towards the mainstream, Craven then had an enormous hit with

Extractions: BODY PARTS Rating USA. 1991. Choice Cuts Cast Plot Psychologist Bill Crushank loses his arm in a car accident but is given a transplant by Dr Agatha Webb. But as he returns to normal life Crushank is haunted by strange visions and finds his new arm is developing a life of its own. Investigation shows that the arm was received from executed murderer Charles Fletcher. As Crushank sets out to discover others who have received transplants from Fletchers other body parts, a killer starts slaughtering each recipient. Eric Red has written two of the best genre films of the last decade - The Hitcher (1986) and Near Dark (1987) - but his solo ventures as director - Bad Moon (1996) and this - leave much to be desired. Theres not much more here than a tired rehashing of The Hands of Orlac , first filmed nearly seventy years ago and a number of times since, most famously as Mad Love (1935). Its an Orlac updated to current horror film-making trends with slick pacing and polished gore effects. But the modernity of the exercise does not disguise how hackneyed and predictable the plot is. Every development - that the limbs have lives of their own, that they belong to a killer - are played for big surprise value that has no surprise for anyone familiar with horror cliches. Some breath of originality arrives about two-thirds of the way through when the Orlac plot is put aside and the exercise turns into a somewhat more interesting piece about a killer recollecting his amputated limbs. There is the bizarre image of John Walsh running about with a collection of legs and arms over his shoulder, but the sudden switch of plot tracks is a disruption of momentum that the film never recovers from. Red demonstrates little in the way of style, although there are a couple of memorable sequences - a rather intriguing if routinely directed sequence which, in a better directors hands, could have been made into real nightmare material where Jeff Fahey stops at the lights as a passenger in a car, Walsh pulls up alongside and slaps a pair of handcuffs on him and then takes off at high speed with Faheys driver Zakes Mokae forced to follow his every move lest Fahey lose his arm; and, although it has been stolen from the end of

Extractions: Photo by GINGER MIKKELSEN Thursday, March 20, 2003 The Road to Mecca 's fine production overcomes script problems By Erin Auerbach It's always wonderful when a play takes you to a place you've never been and introduces you to real people who, in their own small ways, make significant contributions to the world. The Road to Mecca tells the story of Helen Martins' remarkable artwork in the midst of an ignorant and remote South African Karoo village in the 1970s. Nevada Shakespeare Company brings this vibrant character to life under Zakes Mokae's thoughtful direction. In fact, the outstanding performance just about overcomes some major flaws in the over-indulgent playwriting, creating a satisfying evening of theater. Athol Fugard's play is full of expository fluff and infiltrated with "artistic license" that detracts from the fascinating chronicle of Helen Martins' work and her extraordinary friendship. In his notes, Fugard acknowledges that the Elsa Barlow character is a work of fiction, based on a real woman who befriended the eccentric recluse in New Bethesda, a tiny mountain village about 420 miles from Johannesburg and 800 miles from Cape Town. Despite Fugard's overripe language and extraneous subplots, this play tells a lovely story about a woman who truly came alive in her later years and how she defied the perils of South African standards a generation ago.
