Photo: Constantin Film EMIL UND DIE DETEKTIVE is a movie that people under the age of 12 or so will like better than most people over that age. It's not a bad film, but as one German reviewer put it, there have been better German movies. Whether the skateboarding, hip-hopping, "cool" big city kids of today are an improvement over the less colorful ragamuffins of the 1930s and '50s is open to debate, but most 21st century kids will prefer this film to the older versions. Teachers will find this a good G-rated film to use in the German classroom, especially in conjunction with some creative techniques for teaching geography, culture, and language. But when she opens it, the doll turns into a giant and abducts her. However the abduction is foiled by the farmboy Jack, who kills the giant. The king entrusts Jack with a secret mission - to take Elaine to the safety of a convent in France - but Pendragon manages to abduct her on the journey. And so Jack must brave Pendragons sorceries and rescue Elaine from Pendragons castle. However Pendragon has cast a spell that has turned Elaine into a witch. Ray Harryhausens The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) was a huge success. There were a number of other films that came seeking to copy that success. This was one of the better-budgeted. It was also one of the most blatant - it slavishly copies 7th Voyage to the extent of reuniting 7th Voyage s director Nathan Juran, its star Kerwin Mathews and its villain Torin Thatcher. Entire set-pieces have even been staged to copy
