He played 'I', the comparative straight-man to Richard E. Grant 's insanely melodramatic Withnail. Despite this encouraging introduction to cinema, McGann has made only sporadic film appearances, starring in Ken Russell 's The Rainbow (1989), and little-seen features, Dealers (d. Colin Bucksey, 1989), Paper Mask (d. Christopher Morahan, 1990), and Downtime (UK/France, d. Bharat Nalluri, 1997). However, his diverse TV work has ranged from a dashing army officer in The Monocled Mutineer (BBC, 1986), to the eighth Doctor Who in a 1996 telemovie, reintroducing him to cult status material. Brothers Mark Stephen and Joe are also actors. Facing off against the Master (Eric Roberts) with the help of Dr. Grace Holloway (Daphne Ashbrook) and Chang Lee (Yee Jee Tso), the Doctor was a sure bet until the might of American TV ratings quashed all hope; the UK ratings were rather good at 9.06 million viewers, but sadly US televisions barely registered. Once again, Doctor Who was but a television memory. But in 1997, BBC Books took over the mantle of Doctor Who publishing, producing monthly adventures of the new Eighth Doctor and his new companions: London runaway Samantha "Sam" Jones, Liverpudlian Fitz Kreiner, Faction Paradox agent Compassion (nee Laura Tobin), London securities broker Anji Kapoor, and a stowaway newcomer in 2003, Beatrix "Trix" MacMillan. Grant Although accruing many credits after this, the role that truly launched his career was as George Lazenby "The Doctor" (also known as the Eighth Doctor) in the 1996 TV movie revival of the cult BBC series, 'Doctor Who'. However, this single performance as The Doctor, would also be a burden, as audiences so strongly associated him with the role that it looked like it might also end his career. While the public reaction was a testament to his acting ability and suitability for the part, he was concerned about possible typecasting. He is reported to have said of that time: "I don't want to be remembered as the George Lazenby of Doctor Who." But he needn't have worried. Coming from such a strong acting family (with actor brothers Mark McGann, Stephen McGann and Joe McGann), and with a brilliant talent of his own, he was soon offered other roles and his career went from strength to strength.
