Extractions: An Everlasting Piece Laura Clifford Robin Clifford Colm O'Neill's (screenwriter Barry McEvoy) house sits at the crosshairs of the Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods of Belfast, hooded by a homemade firebomb protection. When Colm begins a new job as a barber at Ballylackey Mental Hospital, he finds a fast friend in Protestant poetry lover George (Brian F. O'Byrne, HBO's "Oz"). They're tipped off to a wide open market opportunity, when the owner (Billy Connelly, "Mrs. Brown") of the only men's hair piece company in Northern Ireland lands in their institution for scalping clients in director Barry Levinson's ("Diner") "An Everlasting Piece." Laura: While "An Everlasting Piece" doesn't strain at the yoke to offer up twee Irish charm like this year's "Saving Grace," it's tale of rugs set against 'the troubles' that wears a bit thin overall. Colm and George manage to convince 'the scalper' to hand over his list of clients to begin their new side endeavor. They immediately run into problems with their first client, Mr. Black (Des McAleer), who confuses their doorway sales pitch for a hair piece as a speachifying on herpes (the Irish poking fun at their own accents?). They sell him their sample after the initial confusion, but in their eagerness to make the sale, they take a check, which inevitably bounces. McEvoy strains his screenplay with a character that refuses to pay in order to get Colm to take the piece back by force, only to be chased by a group of Black's lads, then run down by a pack of dogs (did Black pack a steak under that piece or what?). Colm's been abandoned by George, who took off in their car after being accosted by an apparently released Scalper (a never more wasted Billy Connelly).

A lawsuit has been going around for a little bit as of writing this, as the filmmakers sued Dreamworks (the studio that distributed this movie) claiming that they didn't give the movie chance and didn't really support it, claiming the studio would and disapproved of some of the subject matter. A lot of it made the studio seem like a big bad guy (where have we heard this before?), and perhaps, has given some publicity in the movie. Since this movie came out and then just died in such limited release, I didn't check it out. Now you can on video and DVD, and perhaps with this release it will gain more an audience and publicity with those curios about the lawsuit. "An Everlasting Piece" follows Colm and George, two barbers at a local mental hospital, circa the 1980s in Ireland (one is Catholic while the other is a Protastant). When they are soon faced to cut the hair of "The Scalper", the two learn that he used to be the only toupee distributor in Ireland, and he became quite wealthy. So why is he called "The Scalper", why, he scalped people of course! The duo then get a hold of his clients list and become toupee salesmen who get caught up in a whole lot of things. From there, madcap comedy and all sorts of zaniness ensues.

Extractions: The story behind An Everlasting Piece is more interesting than anything in the movie itself. The Irish screenwriter and star of the movie, Barry McEvoy, came up with the idea about two Irish barbers creating a toupee coup in Northern Ireland from his own experiences. According to the press notes, McEvoy grew up as the son of a barber who did his own stint as a hairpiece salesman, and McEvoy's character, Colm, is loosely based on his father, who told his son stories of his adventures selling wigs to both Catholics and Protestants, despite the tensions that almost made his own hair fall out. An Everlasting Piece just feels good. It isn't a great movie; there is no deep, satisfying reward for watching it. But the characters, dialogue, and story form a charismatic relationship with the audience. This is certainly not Barry Levinson's best work to date. He does, however, direct McEvoy's script with the right attitude. Levinson doesn't take the circumstances too seriously these are hairpiece salesman after all but he doesn't go over the top in a quirky comic tone either. There aren't any corny bald jokes: The movie is smart enough not to waste it's time with lame humor about hair thinning.

Extractions: [Access article in PDF] Since opening at the Tricycle Theatre in 1999, Marie Jones's Stones in His Pockets continues to delight audiences and challenge actors with its story of a Hollywood film crew's descent on a small Irish village. Watching a performance of this play in the unofficial capital of American film production made certain aspects of it even more interesting. What audience would be more likely to appreciate the machinations of characters like Caroline Giovanni, the beautiful and selfish American film star who struggles to capture the Irish dialect, or Jock Campbell, the robust security man hired to protect her from the peasantry? However, it was the Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum's emphasis on the satirical elements of American film-making that ultimately weakened the primary message of the play: the journey of two Irish extras to reclaim belief in themselves and in their culture.
