Saludos cordiales, Observatorio Español de Industrias de la Lengua THE EVALUATION OF PARSING SYSTEMS a workshop jointly organised by the CEC Language Engineering 1 projects SPARKLE and ECRAN to be held at the FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON LANGUAGE RESOURCES AND EVALUATION GRANADA, SPAIN, 26 MAY 1998 This workshop will provide a forum for researchers interested in the development and evaluation of natural language grammars and parsing systems, and in the creation of syntactically annotated reference corpora. Organisers: John Carroll, Roberto Basili, Nicoletta Calzolari, Robert Gaizauskas, Gregory Grefenstette WORKSHOP SCOPE AND AIMS The aim of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussion of evaluation methods for parsing systems, and proposals for the development of syntactically annotated language resources. With increased attention to evaluation of component technology in language engineering, evaluation of parsing systems is rapidly becoming a key issue. Numerous methods have been proposed and while one, the Parseval/Penn Treebank scheme, has gained wide usage, this has to some extent been due to the absence of workable alternatives rather than to whole-hearted support. Parseval/PTB evaluation has several limitations and drawbacks, including a commitment to a particular style of grammatical analysis, and oversensitivity to certain innocuous types of misanalysis while failing to penalise other common types of more serious mistake. Also, the original published description of the scheme and the evaluation software widely distributed as a follow-up to it is specific to the English language. It may be that there are currently no alternative more workable schemes or proposals, but this needs to be more fully discussed: this workshop will provide an opportunity for such a debate.

I loved his performance as the Vicar, and after the film was over I started surfing the net to find out more about his work. Unfortunately I found virtually nothing on the web other than the standard CV’s and some available films. Given that videos seemed to be the only way I had to explore John McEnery’s work I started buying them here and there. The next few films I saw were Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Romeo and Juliet, and One Russian Summer. I kept trying to find some US fans to discuss John McEnery’s work with, but as John’s American fans probably know, British actors who aren’t in the big Hollywood flicks don’t get in the public eye much, no matter how good their work is. I started feeling like I must be the only John McEnery fan in the US, and so this site came into being - partly to show some sort of appreciation for someone I think is a great actor, and partly to find out where the heck all the John McEnery fans are from. I am finding out there are a lot more fans of his in the US than I had thought, not to mention all over Europe and even some I've heard from in the Middle-East and Australia. When I first launched the site I had no idea so many people from so many different areas of the globe were familiar with John McEnery's work. I know it's enjoyable to know what projects favorite actors are working on, even if some of us are a long way from the UK and can't always make it to see it in person, so I will endeavor to keep the site up to date.
