Extractions: 335 x 50 minute episodes As its name implies, The Box was set at a fictional television station (Channel 12) and followed the lives of various station personnel, both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Heading the cast was the ubiquitous Ken James who played Tony Wild, a TV policeman actor who had difficulty remembering where fiction ended and reality began in his series, Manhunt James' character gave the writers of The Box the chance to settle the score against the egotism of some of the actors in Crawford's real police series! Another Channel 12 program was a 'live to air' show called Big Night Out which was hosted by Gary Burke. A typical episode had Burke missing his cue after an ad break as he was in his dressing room with a woman. It later eventuated that the woman he slept with was a school girl, and thus, under the age of consent. A journalist from Tele View decided to investigate why Gary was not on screen after an ad break. At the end of the program, one of the show's stars stumbled onto the stage and collapsed as he was drunk !

Extractions: 1396 x 30 minute episodes Back in 1979 you could watch The Young Doctors and either ogle Delvene Delaney or actually try to follow the plots. This show featured a great smorgasbord of gorgeous babes! No doubt this fact greatly contributed to the success of the show as the acting, scripts and sets were all of the extremely dreadful variety. Nevertheless, the show ran five nights a week until 1981, primarily to young male viewers. This truly woeful soap opera from Australia featured the lives and loves of the young staff in a big city hospital - now there's an original concept . . . White coated slap and tickle among good-looking young people. Sex scenes were not permitted by the producers however. The kiss was it! Accordingly, the emphasis was on romance and relationships, while divorce, sex and medical or social problems were all off-limits for this deliberately lightweight serial. On the other hand, bombings, shootings and invasions by dangerous psychopaths were all permissible ways of removing regular characters or rearranging relationships.
Prisoner Cell Block H » On The Inside » Character Profiles Played by judy mcburney Pixie is sent to Wentworth in episode 379 for gettingmarried just too many times! She loves the idea of marriage and has a rather http://www.prisoner-cellblockh.co.uk/profiles/pixiemason.html
Extractions: Another source of comedy during the series, Pixie is a favourite with fans and even tries to convince the officers that she has lost her memory but doesn't do that good a job because she is sentenced to five years inside for her crime. Still in love with the idea of being in love, she writes herself an ad in a newspaper lonely hearts page and gets a huge response from possible husbands! She picks a selection of responses and gets them all to visit her in Wentworth (episode 402) although one of her visitors is a newspaper journalist who sees this as an excellent story to use in his paper. Pixie, whilst on the outside with Meg Morris for an interview, finds herself her perfect job in a Bridal Boutique and meets her next prospective husband, Ralph, there during her time on work release. Ralph convinces Pixie that she has been released from the prison when he abducts her (episode 427) and even signs a card from Colleen Powell congratulating them on their engagement. It is not long before Pixie is captured and sent back to prison again to finish off the rest of her sentence. During her time inside her best friend Judy Bryant falls in love with her and although Pixie doesn't realise this until later on Judy has written a song about her - "Pixie's Song". When Pixie finds the lyrics (episode 488) she finds it difficult to understand how Judy feels about her but slowly appears to come to terms with it.

Extractions: NUMBER 96 (1972-1977) continued go to start of Number 96 NUMBER 96: THE MOVIE A movie version of the serial was filmed in colour at the end of 1973 featuring most of the current cast. The film was released in May 1974 and despite being savaged by critics, hordes of eager fans flocked to see their favourite characters on the big screen, and the film was soon ranked as one of Australia's highest grossing films ever, to that time. The film does not differ much from the series proper in style, though it did contain a small amount of location filming, some brief (and clumsily mounted) action sequences, and full-frontal nudity, things that were not seen in the television version during this early period. The film was shot on 16 mm in eleven days and the budget was so low that the producers would not disclose it. Most of the sets and costumes already existed, and the cast received an extra week's pay for their work on the film. While critics consistently gave bad reviews , fans loved the film. In his May 8, 1974 review in The Australian newspaper, critic Mike Harris noted that "I've never been in a cinema before where the audience has applauded when characters made their entrances."
Aussie Soap Archive: The Young Doctors Perhaps the most popular of these were pretty blond judy mcburney as nurse TaniaLivingston and handsome Tony Alvarez who played her brooding sweetheart Dr http://www.ozemail.com.au/~fangora/doctors.html
Extractions: THE YOUNG DOCTORS (1976-1981) The Young Doctors was produced by Grundy's for Channel Nine. Their second foray into drama, after Class of '74 , this was again a lightweight serial designed for stripping in an early evening timeslot, and Alan Coleman was again the man in charge. The doctors here were the youngest ever, and they were ably assisted by a gaggle of glamourous nurses. There was a high turnover of young actors in the show, though the more senior cast members remained more stable. Of any Australian show I can remember, this seemed to look the most primitive, though the situation would improve in the show's later years. The few sets built for the show looked very shoddy, there was an absolute minimum of camera movements, and the early years featured no location work whatsoever. Many long stretches of the action occurred in the reception area of the fictional Albert Memorial Hospital where the series was set. A group of characters would assemble in reception, play out their scene and move on. Then the next bunch would wander into shot and play out their scene, and so on. Kiosk lady Ada Simmonds (Gwen Plumb) oversaw the parade of doctors, nurses, orderlies and various hospital officials playing out their mostly personal but sometimes professional dramas, frequently chipping in with bits of advice and some crusty asides. Rosie Bailey as Nurse Virginia Mason in The Young Doctors Despite its obvious low budget, quite a few good actors appeared in the show. Perhaps best of all was Cornelia Frances who portrayed strict and officious Sister Scott, the bane of the nurses who worked for her. Though she stayed in the role less than three years, Sister Scott is perhaps the best remembered character from the show. After several dramatic storylines including a rape, being investigated for causing the death of a colleague, and being jilted at the altar when her fiance got cold feet, Grace would fall hard when a faulty lift failed to arrive as the doors opened, and she absent-mindedly stepped into the shaft.

Lynda: June: Can you remember any significant events while growing up that shaped your compassionate thinking towards animals?
