Extractions: One thing about the format of DVD, some studios have used it not only to sell their high profile, big budget films but also to preserve film classics and make them available to a new generation of film enthusiast. Universal has done this with the presentation of five of the best known and loved classics from the Marx Brothers; Duck Soup, Horse Feathers, Monkey Business, Animal Crackers and The Cocoanuts. Although the earliest of these films are now seventy five years hold they still will make you laugh out loud. After all, this is what makes for a classic film, a timeless quality that can transcend the generations. A little note for the younger viewers of these films, try to put aside the slick production qualities that you have be privileged to grow up with, these films represent the very beginnings of film as an American media. Animal Crackers, like Cocoanuts, was taken from a stage production made famous by the Marx Brothers. Here they take on the world of adveture with Groucho as a famous African explorer and the search for a missing painting. Once again the jokes are non stop, everything from quick one liners to drawn out series of soliloquies, usually provided by Groucho. Released in 1930 the cast and crew where still very much on the learning curve. The production values where primitive, even crude. No one had yet gotten the hang of the difference between the stage and a movie set. Monkey Business, made in 1931 was the beginning of a bit more focus for the Brothers. There is a slicker feel to the film. This was the first opus created by them exclusively for film and it shows. They seemed to have finally abandoned the need to recreate their stage success and focus on the new art of movie making. This film also has one of the most classic and often imitated routines, the classic ships state room gag where it seems that everyone on board winds up in a single, small cabin. This film is often considered to be the best of their body of work; it is funny almost on a gut level.

One of the silver screen's zaniest comic teams, the four Marx Brothers cultivated their chaotic comic skills on the vaudeville and Broadway stage in the 1920s before making more than a dozen film comedies primarily for Paramount and MGM in the 1930s and '40s. Though often lacking a coherent or even comprehensible plotline, the Marx Brothers' movies combine chaotic physical comedy and sight gags with merry melodies and frequently irreverent (even risqué) dialogue to create a comic cinematic experience that is one of a kind. Their films were not the most financially successful comedies ever made, nor did the brothers enjoy the more widespread appeal of more sedate comedians, but their screen antics earned them an honorary Oscar in 1974 (presented to Groucho after the deaths of Harpo and Chico) and provide a unique insight into the brand of vaudeville humor that reigned supreme in the United States in the years before talking pictures. Extractions: (Originally Published in The Santa Barbara News and Review, June 10, 1977) When asked if he would like to write for the Marx Brothers, Pulitzer playwright George S. Kaufman muttered, Id as soon write for the Barbary Apes. Despite this intransigent attitude, Kaufman finally broke down and wrote two very successful Broadway plays for them, Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers. Both of these plays were converted into the profitable silver screen format, the latter now playing at the Magic Lantern. For both Kaufman and his part-time collaborator, Morrie Ryskind, it was heart-rending to watch the Marx Brothers brutally deface the script with improvised jokes and extraneous skits. But the rewards were great, both financially and artistically. Kaufman later said he learned a valuable lesson from the brothers how to let go of jokes that dont work. While Animal Crackers was still on the road, Ryskind sat in the audience and noted which jokes garnered the least guffaws. Ryskind then pruned these from the script, when he adapted it for Paramount films in 1930.

Facts of the Case The Cocoanuts Mr. Hammer (Groucho) runs a bankrupt Florida hotel called The Cocoanuts. He'll try anything to make some money, even cozy up to rich Mrs. Potter (Margaret Dumont). But his money-making scheme is in danger of being sabotaged when two con men (Chico and Harpo) blow into town and turn everything upside down! The Brothers came roaring out of vaudeville with a combination of sight gags and wacky wordplay that more than filled the silver screen. Nat Perrin headed a great comedy writing team gave them scripts that made up for the lack of visuals. The Marx Brothers had occasional shows on radio. "Beagle, Shyster and Beagle," then "Flywheel, Shyster, and Flywheel," was about lawyers, of course. Groucho, the "affront" man for the team, played Waldorf T. Beagle, attorney at law, unless he took lunch, at which point he was attorney at lunch. And so on. Chico played Emmanuel Ravelli, Beagle's assistant. Many of the routines from the lawyer show were used in "Duck Soup." Later in 1934, they had a show called the Marx of Time, and Grouch played Ulysses H. Drivel, a reporter. Chico was Penelli. It seems every character Chico played had to end in a vowel. But then, Chico always played it Chico's way. Harpo's career on radio was severely hampered, for obvious reasons.
