By Andrew Ferguson Frank Sinatra turns 80 on December 12, setting off one of those familiar convulsions in the vast publicity machine of American show biz. The smoke has barely cleared from the last convulsion, concluded only a week or two ago for the Beatles, on the twenty-fifth anniversary of their breakup as "the band that changed the world." The juxtaposition makes for a revealing contrast. Frank never much liked the Beatles, never grew comfortable with the way they changed the world. Of course he didn't: the world they changed, back there in the mid-sixties, was Frank's world. In addition to the TV specials, the CD retrospectives, the radio marathons, the somber appreciations in the newsmagazines and the lifestyle sections of newspapers, the publicity machine is offering up a crateful of books that range from the merely worshipful to the hagiographic. Extractions: Styles: Vocal-Easy Listening Traditional Pop Vocal Pop Al Martino was one of the great Italian-American pop crooners, boasting a string of hit singles and LPs that stretched from the early '50s all the way into the mid-'70s. However, he is perhaps even better known for his role in The Godfather as singer Johnny Fontane, a character supposedly based on Frank Sinatra but with eerie similarities to Martino's own career. Martino's 1952 debut smash, "Here in My Heart," made him the first American artist to top the charts in Great Britain, but his career was interrupted by gangster interference, which kept him out of the U.S. for much of the '50s. He later returned and rejuvenated his career, scoring his signature hit with 1965's classic "Spanish Eyes" and reaching a whole new audience via The Godfather in 1972. Martino was born Alfred Cini in Philadelphia on October 7, 1927. His Italian immigrant parents ran a masonry business, and he worked alongside his brothers as a bricklayer while growing up. However, he was more interested in music, and was inspired by Al Jolson and Perry Como to try his own hand at singing. When his boyhood friend Alfredo Cocozza changed his name to Mario Lanza and became an international opera star, the possibility of a career in music suddenly seemed plausible. Adopting the stage name Al Martino (after his maternal grandfather's last name), he performed in local nightclubs for a time, and moved to New York City in 1948 with Lanza's encouragement. He went on to win first place on the Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts show, thanks to a rendition of Perry Como's "If." That exposure helped him land a record deal with the Philadelphia-based independent label BBS.

Extractions: Phil Baker has been offered a place in the Kendo Summer School in Saitama, Japan, in late July. 8th Korean Kumdo Championship The ANU Kendo club participated in the 8th Korean Kumdo Championship on Saturday 14th May at Macquarie University in Sydney, with members competing or refereeing in most of the competitions. About 100 competitors from seven clubs enjoyed a very well-run tournament and we thank the organisers and sponsors. Congratulations to Adam McNeil (ANUKC) who won the kyu grade individual competition adding to his recent first place in the National Kendo Championship. Kirby Smith (UNSW club) also added to his National Kendo Championship, winning the dan individual competition. Martino Ellero (ANUKC) fought on despite a shoulder injury to take third place in the dan individual competition. Of the eight ANUKC competitors in the individual competitions, four made it to the second round or further. Phong Le and Minh Hyunh performed outstandingly in their first tournament. Phong progressed to the second round with two convincing wins and Minh narrowly missed out on reaching the second round after replaying his first pool which was tied on points. The ANU club fielded a team in the kyu teams competition and won the first round against Sydney University 3-1 but lost the semi-final against the HanRimWon club 2-1. MooDoKwon won the kyu team competition and the combined team of Sydney University and University of Technology won the dan team event.

Extractions: Now, 70 years after the damming and diversion of the North Fork Skokomish, the Cushman Project is in the final stages of evaluation by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for issuance of a new 30 to 50-year license. For the first time since its construction, FERC will assess the project's past and future effects on the Skokomish watershed. The original construction of the project not only violated the Skokomish Tribe's treaty rights to watershed resources, but over the years it has almost completely destroyed the once productive North Fork salmon runs. In addition, it has seriously degraded the Skokomish River estuary, and silted up the mainstem Skokomish, subjecting Skokomish Valley residents to more frequent flooding.
