Perhaps, she must have been the most recorded voice in the history of this century. Born on 28th September, 1929 in Indore Madhya Pradesh, Lata hails from a singers family. Her father ' Dinanath Mangeshkar' was a play back singer and owned a theatrical company and her sister Asha Bhosle remind her sole competitor still the 90's. Lata took her first music lessons from her father at the age of 5 and also studied with Aman Ali Khan Sahib and later Amanat Khan. Following her father's death in 1942 and the burden of supporting the family forced Lata to choose the singing profession at the very early age of 16. She started her singing career by the movie Kiti Hasal in 1942. In the later coming years, she also played miscellaneous roles from a producer to composer and actress for various films. She has been defying the law of gravity for more than 50 years by staying firmly ensconced in her position, as though age has bypassed her. Lata sang innumerable songs in her awesome repertoire which cannot be denied either on merit or success and songs that contributed to shaping one of the greatest success stories of the 20th Century. Batish It was around the year 1945, when I had the oportunity of meeting Lata Mangeshkar, also addressed among her admirers and fans in Maharashtra province and among the music community of Bombay (presently called Mumbai), as "Latabai." The late Pandit Amarnath, his brother-in-law Shri Kashmiri Laal, and myself, had recently come from Lahore in connection with a "Music Direction" assignment for the film "Shaam Saveraa." This movie was being produced by Mr. Mohanlal Kapoor, a wealthy person with a lucrative diamond business. Also in our company at that time was Bhagat Nigaahi Raam, one of the prominent preachers of Punjab. He was a great friend of Pandit Amarnath's father, Pandit Devi Chand. He was on a visit to Bombay. I remember Pandit Hussan Laal, the youngest brother of Pandit Amarnaath, bringing his car and driving all of us to an old temple in a suburb located between Tardeo and Grant Road. This temple had some adjoining living rooms in which Miss Lata, along with her mother, sisters, their younger brother and other family members used to live.

Her father was also her musical 'guru'. After his sudden demise in 1942, Lata had to set off in search of work at the tender age of 13, in order to support her family. Initially, she performed bit roles in a few Marathi and Hindi films. She made her playback singing debut with Vasant Joglekar's Marathi film Kiti Hasaal (1942), but the song was dropped from the film. Finally, she got her first break with the same director's Aap Ki Sewa Mein, five years later. However, it was Ghulam Haider's Majboor (1948) that actually pushed Lata into prominence. By the time she sang Uthaye jaa unke sitam for Naushad in Andaz (1949) and Aayega aanewala for Khemchand Prakash in Mahal (1949), she had already obliterated prominent singers of the day like Shamshad Begum and Amirbai Karnataki. And once Noorjehan migrated to Pakistan post-Partition, there was no one left to challenge Lata Mangeshkar's supremacy over the realm of playback singing. A position she has maintained to this day! The minimal liner notes from her CD, Mata , state that she has more than 150 albums to her name and that she has contributed to countless Bollywood movie soundtracks. In fact, Lata is arguably considered one of the most powerful women in Bollywood. (Bollywood is the Indian equivalent of Hollywood, although it should probably be called Mollywood now since Bombay is now known as Mumbai). I have a limited exposure to Indian music and own only a handful of CDs from India (many of which are from soundtracks, not surprisingly). Consequently, to get a better perspective about who Lata is, I asked a couple of my Indian co-workers for their impressions of Lata and her CD, Mata . Like Cher or Madonna, it seems that Lata only needs one name for recognition. Lata was very popular during the '60s, '70s and '80s. Unfortunately, with age, her voice has started to break during performances and her popularity is not what it once was. As an interesting side note, one of her competitors in the singing world is her younger sister, Asha Bhosle. I understand that these two musical queens have not gotten along for decades! The channel will telecast the film Maithra Jeevache on 27 February at 7:30 pm. Maithra Jeevache is produced by Lata Mangeshkar's sister Usha Mangeskhar under the banner of Mahalakshmi Chitra. Alpha Marathi senior vice president Nitin Vaidya is upbeat about the fact that the reclusive Mangeshkar has chosen the channel to telecast the movie. "It is an honour to Alpha Marathi. Lataji's family approached us with the film and we responded immediately. In every Maharashtrian's heart, she has got a special place," says Vaidya. In the film, Mangeshkar speaks at length about her evolution as a singer. She recollects vivid memories about her father and her childhood. She also speaks about some of the music directors she worked with including Shankar Jaikishan and R D Barman. She thanks her audience in the film for the kind of support they have given her.
