He was like the breakout, stand-out character on that show and on Benson. It was a great lesson in film acting, watching Robert Guillaume, because sometimes you get drawn into trying to do too much, and you're doing things with your face, or you're desperately trying to emote. And Robert just plays the scene, does it incredibly simply and very dignified. He's a very classy actor.

Extractions: Daily Arts Writer When is a sitcom not a sitcom? When said sitcom is "Sports Night." Not that there's anything wrong with that. In fact, "Sports Night" is at its best when it's not trying to be funny, giving it the feel of a half-hour drama. The idea for "Sports Night" is "SportsCenter" meets "The Larry Sanders Show." Series creator and writer Aaron Sorkin (screenwriter of "A Few Good Men" and "The American President") has a great idea, which isn't quite realized. While "Sports Night" has the intelligence of "SportsCenter" and "The Larry Sanders Show," ultimately it lacks their zing. The cast of "Sports Night," Joshua Malina, Sabrina Lloyd, Josh Charles, Felicity Huffman, Peter Krause and Robert Guillaume, get pumped for their premiere tonight on ABC. The pilot episode focuses on the show's stars, Josh Charles and Peter Krause who play "Sports Night's" anchors Dan Rydell and Casey McCall, respectively. McCall is recently divorced and in a funk that is dragging down the show. This is bringing heat from the network onto the show's executive producer Isaac Jaffee (Robert Guillaume) and the show's producer Dana Whitaker (Felicity Huffman). Though the pair has protected McCall until the point where the pilot picks up, they accept the fact they might have to replace him. Rydell's refusal to do the show without McCall is the only thing saving him. What also falls short are the one-liners characters blurt out every once in a while. The comments seem out of place with the show's more serious atmosphere. The writers and producers of "Sports Night" either need to punch up the scripts a bit, or need to make the decision to become a half-hour drama. The show needs to commit itself one way or the other.

Extractions: When Rob Lowe made the surprise announcement that he would be leaving "The West Wing," one of primetime's most beloved and critically adored shows, questions arose about who would fill his shoes as the White House's speechwriter. Much to America's surprise, the part didn't go to a big-name actor— it instead went to "Sports Night" alumnus and longtime friend of Aaron Sorkin, Joshua Malina. And while the announcement of the newest addition to "The West Wing" may have shocked viewers, Malina says that secretly he always knew he would be joining the show. "I always expected that I would end up on the show at some point, though I never talked to anyone about it," the actor says. "When I first got called in to do the show it was only for a five episode arc and the studio told me that they would see where it went from there. At that point though it was just a big score to do five episodes cause I was such a huge fan of the show." "Aaron's had a long career of hiring me," Malina says with a laugh, "but I don't mind saying that if my friend hadn't written a certain play I wouldn't have been in it. Or that if my friend Aaron didn't create "The West Wing" I wouldn't be on it. I'm comfortable with that. Aaron writes for me in a way someone who doesn't know me may not be able to, and he's given me the opportunity for my work to go out there and be seen. I can't complain about not getting my fair share. In fact, I feel guilty sometimes because I have talented friends who are struggling to find a job and I got one of the most coveted jobs on TV. I only wish more people had friends like Aaron who were talented and got jobs for you."

Joshua Malina took a simpler road , and he didn't even realize it at the time . He just listened to his mother. Malina and Sorkin became close friends, discussing theater and acting and what it would be like to eventually make it.
