Bevor er nach Hollywood kam, hatte Lugosi an ungarischen Theatern die Rolle des sinnlich-romantischen Liebhabers gegeben Zu der Zeit, als die österreich-ungarische Monarchie zusammenbrach und es für kurze Zeit zu einem blutigen kommunistischen Regime kam, war er einer der führenden Schauspieler Budapsts. Lugosi hate bei der Gründung einer Schauspielergewerkschaft mitgewirkt und führte ihre Protestmärsche bis 1919 an, als er sich aus Angst um sein Leben schließlich gezwungen sah, nach Deutschland zu flüchten. Verborgen in einem Zigeunerkarren, hatten er und seine junge Ehefrau alle Grenzübergänge unbemerkt passiert, wurdne dann aber gesichtet, wie sie über ein im Dunkel liegendes Feld auf ein offenes Flugzeug zuhasteten. Die Lugosis schafften es trotzdem, dem Kugelhagel zu entkommen. Er sah seine Heimat Ungarn nie wieder!

The band's freak-show approach to rock assured them a significant cult following in their heyday, and the tone they set would resonate through the '80s in such bands as the Mission, Sisters of Mercy, and Nine Inch Nails.
