Contact Me Behind the SCENES, theatre changes lives In a culture where Vietnamese artists are only starting to develop a profile, actor and playwright Tony Le Nguyen is an exception. Now recognised throughout Australia for his performances in the australian film Romper Stomper and in television series such as "Fast Forward","Secrets" and "Paradise Beach", Le Nguyen has moved his work into production and onto the stage. In December 1997, SBS television screened his drama, Worlds Apart, and in September 1998, his play Chay Vong Vong will move from Melbourne to Sydney where it is being staged by Urban Theatre Projects. But it is behind the scenes where his energy for life, youth and the theatre is changing lives. Le Nguyen, who graduated from Victoria University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1997, has used his own feelings of alienation from family and society to create an opportunity for other young people to express themselves. His play Chay Vong Vong, first performed at the Footscray Community Arts Centre in Melbourne, explores ritual, music and dance to tell the stories of teenagers like himself. Working with local Vietnamese actors, Le Nguyen unfolds his own journey of self-discovery after arriving in Australia from Vietnam when he was ten years old.

The company received its first funding from the Queens Trust in 1995 to produce Chay Vong Vong, a play written and directed by Tony Le Nguyen with the Vietnamese Community in Footscray, Melbourne. The following year, the company received funding from the Australia Council and the Sidney Myers Foundation to re-stage Chay Vong Vong as a fully professional production at the Napier Street Theatre, in South Melbourne.

I arrived in Australia in 1978 and I didn't speak a word of English. I grew up in a suburb called Broadmeadows. I don't know if anyone knows Melbourne, Broadmeadows. In those days we were the first of everything. We were the first Vietnamese there. My dad was the first person to go work in this factory called Ford up there. It was considered to be one of the roughest suburbs of Melbourne and the people who were living there were the sort of Pauline Hansons these days that you see. I had a very violent, angry, and educated father. My dad was very angry and violent and educated. He used to be a teacher in Vietnam and during the war he was an interpreter for the South Vietnamese government so he was considered as an enemy of the state, so that's the reason why we were on the hit list. If I hadn't gone I would have been in Cambodia and if I were in Cambodia now I would be about two metres under the ground, so I wouldn't be here at the moment.

I just don't want to sound like I'm whingeing or sort of knocking someone. I think this conference should be called wimpy conference because it's not really daring at all, because I think that my work is pretty daring, not only because my work involves challenging Vietnamese culture, challenging adults, challenging authority but it's not only about challenging, it's about questioning. For me, as an artist, I find the Australia Council is very anti-youth and the reason why I said it's anti-youth is because it's not accessible to young people and I think that's something that hopefully people from Australia Council might hear this and take it to their heart because I think as long as the way they structure the Australia Council in certain places and if they have a real commitment to trying to get young people to be involved and have more say into the process, how to access funds and what sort of money that's going to go to them, then I think there must be some real change, similar to the Community Cultural Development Fund. There must be a push for more money that focuses, they have one youth arts officer I think at the Australia Council, and Elena didn't even know about it and that's very surprising.
