Extractions: This photo shows Bath Iron Works in 1957. The destroyers at the fitting-out pier and on the building ways are Forrest Sherman (DD 931) class ships. The two ships afloat are DuPont (DD 941) and Bigelow (DD 942) (DD 941 is probably outboard); those on the ways are (right to left) Hull (DD 945), Edson (DD 946) and Somers (DD 947). The northern part of the yard is shown here much as it is today, but considerable expansion to the south (left in this view) has since taken place. Today there are only three building ways, rather than four, and they are served by two very large cranes. A further expansion project, now underway, will see replacement of the old building ways by a modern land-level assembly/launch facility. The ships shown here have not been so fortunate: DuPont and Bigelow now await scrapping;
Extractions: For many years my father and I have been trying to find out exactly what happened to my Uncle, Sgt (Flight Engineer) Henry Pole, 1648307 Royal Air Force (Volunteer Reserve) 460 (Royal Australian Air Force) Squadron After much research we discovered that his Lancaster number JB598 took off from RAF Binbrook at 2012 hours on the night of 26th March 1944 for a bombing raid on Essen. The plane crashed on the German/Belgian border at Prum (Germany). The whole crew were killed and are today buried side by side at Hotton Military Cemetery (Belgium). Immediately after the crash however they were interred in the town cemetery at St Vith (Belgium) and there bodies moved after the war. Although we know that they died we have never been able to establish exactly how or when the plane was destroyed. were they outbound or returning? As Prum is way off course if the route was direct. We suspect maybe that a detour was used to confuse the Germans. Apparently there were rumours at the time of his death that the Germans were shooting airmen as they descended in their parachutes. This was told to my grandmother at the time and that my uncle had sustained terrible injuries and survived for a few days. I am suspicious of these rumours as it would mean that the Germans were very accurate with their shooting to kill all of the crew at one time, especially at night. We have been to the graves of the crew and all the headstones have the same dates of death

Sadly he did not return form his last sortie on 12.12.1944. The crew are buried together in the Reichwald Cemetery in Germany. Her name is Pat Kazmi and she will be writing to you soon, Good Luck and God Bless ! Subject: 460 Squadron From: "Peter L. Reid" < bgofilt@impulse.net.au Dear Mr Dunn, I must congratulate you on your web-site. Perhaps you can help me clear up a few matters. In crew listings etc under pilot J. Clark (C17)all the crew bar 1 are listed as KIA on 12/12/44. The exception being L. Milner (E) who is listed as POW. According to Peter Firkins in his book, all the crew were killed. All the info I have points to the same conclusion. Those killed included my uncle F-O Brian C. Reid DF, who was navigator.
