Extractions: Ukrainian performers featured at opening of Pan American Games by Roman Yereniuk WINNIPEG - The Pan American Games, featuring athletes from North and South America, are being held in Winnipeg from July 23 to August 8. Among the 3,000 performers at the official opening ceremonies on Friday, July 23, at Winnipeg Stadium was a significant Ukrainian contingent. Towards the second half of the opening program some 27 multicultural dance groups - including seven Ukrainian dance groups from Winnipeg and the surrounding area - staged a major cultural celebration. The groups were: Rozmai, Romanets, Vitrets, Tryzub, Troyanda, Zoloto and the Rossdale Dancers. In total, some 120 Ukrainian dancers were featured in the cultural celebration. Another feature of the opening ceremonies was the singing and dancing performance of Jeremy Kushnier, who is a major Ukrainian success story, having won an audition to become the featured star of the Broadway production of "Footloose" at the Richard Rodgers Theater in New York. He sings the lead role of Ren in the production, which opened in October 1998 and has been playing to packed houses ever since. Mr. Kushnier, 23, is a product of Winnipeg's Ukrainian community and the city's performing arts community. He attended Ukrainian "sadochok" (preschool) in Winnipeg and danced with both the Rozmai and Rusalka ensembles. His proud parents, Craig and Gail Kushnier, always encouraged him in the performing arts. His grandparents, Anne and Nicholas Kushnier and Henry Mycan, originally lived in North End Winnipeg.

Extractions: It's not all that surprising to learn that ``Aida," the latest Disney-produced musical, was initially conceived as a feature-length cartoon. With its two-dimensional characters, simplified plot, and pop-rock songs, it could easily have given ``The Little Mermaid" a run for its money at the box office. But in a reverse of the Disney formula that's been used so successfully with ``Beauty and the Beast" and ``The Lion King," ``Aida" came to the stage first in what turned out to be a laborious process. When it premiered in Atlanta in 1998 under the title ``Elaborate Lives: The Legend of Aida," it was such a complete disaster that everything, from sets to most of the cast, were scrapped and the show was rewritten to re-emerge (at the cost of some $20 million) on Broadway two years later. While the reviews were largely middling, it became an immediate hit, winning four Tony Awards and selling out for more than two years.

The Rhythm Club<, A CurtainUp Review jeremy kushnier, Footloose s only saving grace, gives a performance that is energetic Starring jeremy kushnier, Lauren Kennedy and Tim Martin Gleason; http://www.curtainup.com/rhythmclubdc.html
Extractions: Set in Hamburg, in 1938, against the backdrop of anti-Semitism, political turmoil, and artistic censorship, the story revolves around three young people and their love for the hip but verboten music of the time swing. Composer Matthew Sklar has written a highly derivative score which, providing you like the New Orleans/Harlem jazz that is its source (I do as did the rest of this afternoon's audience), is terrific. The 26-year old Sklar's music, to put it in jive, swings like a gate. And the band puts it over very well indeed. Chops they've got. Jodi Moccia's choreography borrows heavily from other recent musicals that have paid homage to the acrobatic lindy and bebop dances of the 30s and many of the numbers especially the first and second act openers are stunners. The dancing is good and the singing, adequate to good. The costumes are somewhat somber and the set nothing but windows waiting to be shattered a reminder that homes at this time were no longer safe from intrusion. Those who looked out saw a way of life destroyed and those who looked in violated more than privacy.

Extractions: Go here for Susan Davidson's Review of Footloose when it opened at the Kennedy Center in DC. The story line, casting (with one exception), dance and song routines remain unchanged from what's outlined in that review. Unlike many big musicals which go tripping around the country after a successful New York opening, a Footloose tour was already in place before the 10/22/98 New York opening. Stops in this itinerary are: Cleveland (12/15/98) and in 1999: Green Bay, Wisconsin; Columbus, Ohio; and Nashville, Tennessee. When Footloose jumpstarted its rebirth from a 1984 movie with a hit-making score to a high energy 6.5 million dollar musical at the Kennedy Center, Susan Davidson (who sandwiches CurtainUp reviews and features into her schedule as the Washingtonian 's arts editor) was there. Now the musical has danced its way to the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Its arrival marks my third "Second Thoughts" on a show that traveled from DC to NYC. in less than six months.

Extractions: May 29 - June 3 The last time Rent was in Vancouver, its abbreviated stay signaled that the production had the same hard luck as some of the show's main characters: downtrodden and unappreciated, the last two weeks of its run were cancelled. Fortunately, the award-winning rock musical made its successful return to Vancouver last week, more than two years after disappointing attendance figures caused the extended engagement at The Vogue Theatre to be cut short. Normally suited to smaller venues, Rent began a one-week stint at the spacious Queen Elizabeth Theatre last Tuesday night as part of a national tour. The strength of the musical has always been the high-energy interplay between the performers, and the opening-night performance seldom lacked the intensity to inspire the audience members - even though most of them looked to be from Vancouver's upper crust, far removed from the realities of the characters' lives. Rent chronicles a year in the life of a community of poverty-stricken artists and intellectuals in a modern adaptation of Puccini's opera La Bohème. Aside from coping with the daily challenges of poverty, drug addiction, AIDS and romantic relationships, the main players find themselves trying to save their neighbourhood from development.

Extractions: First off, let me say that I am not a fan of this film-to-stage genre. Actually, let me clarify that. I am not a fan of this film soundtrack -to-stage genre, which is what the two musicals mentioned above are. Taking characters from a film and slapping them variously with songs featured on the soundtrack, even if the emotions they express at that particular moment are somewhat reflected in the mood of the song, is a risky business. For one thing, if the songs arent written by the same people, the score will sound haphazard at best. Such is the case with Footloose With new songs by Tom Snow and old, straight-of-the-soundtrack 80s classics like Lets Hear it for the Boy, Footloose, and Holding Out for a Hero, the score is a wildly uneven collage of sounds and styles. We get rock, pop and just about everything else, including country, in the course of the shows two hours. I admit, its great to hear old 80s favorites, but Im not sure that Lets Hear it for the Boy should ever belong on the Broadway stage, even if is
