After a career as a radio broadcaster and newspaper columnist, Kovacs starred in several television series in the early 1950s, beginning with "It's Time for Ernie," in May 1951, and followed by "Kovacs on the Corner," "Ernie in Kovacsland," "Kovacs Unlimited" and "The Ernie Kovacs Show." Kovacs was one of the first performers to really use the full visual potential of television, making it almost a co-star in his act. Unlike many of the other television series of the early 1950s, Kovacs' shows weren't just recycled radio programs or old vaudeville acts. Kovacs used television and simple special effects to create visual humor that could never be done on radio, and had never before been attempted on television. For example, Kovacs tilted both a table and the camera at the same angle, so the table appeared to be level. When he sat down and tried to pour milk into a glass on the table, the milk appeared to defy gravity and flowed out of the pitcher at an angle. In Kovacs' world, figures in paintings moved, office furniture moved in time to music, and women gradually disappeared as they got undressed. Kovacs also broke the "fourth wall," separating the entertainer from the audience, and often spoke to his camera crew, the studio audience, and even the audience watching at home "I'd like to thank you all for inviting me into your living rooms this evening. It's just a shame you didn't straighten up a little." In early 1957, Kovacs presented the first half-hour, prime-time television show done entirely in pantomime. For Kovacs, television was a brand-new toy to play with.

The Ernie Kovacs Show originated in Philadelphia, circa 1952, and was later picked up by ABC, where it ran until Kovacs perished in a car accident on January 13, 1962. The show was like nothing of its kind, before or since: even the most straight-ahead material was slightly askew literally so, as in one famous episode. At times it resembled surrealist performance art more than any orthodox tomfoolery. Take, for example, the Nairobi Trio, clad in derbies, trenchcoats, and gorilla masks, beating each other across the noggin with mallets and vases to the tune of "Solfeggio," which would be a standard lounge number if not for the utterly incoherent vocal chorus. Kovacs loved music, and made a point of incorporating his favorite songs into the show. His theme song, "Oriental Blues," is a lovely bit of stride piano with a drummer that sounds like Gene Krupa. Two versions bookend the disc. Though he often used the tunes as accompaniment for his skits, he also featured live performances on his show. Kovacs' widow Edie Adams (they duet on "The Wrong Man") has kinescopes of the old shows, but this compilation includes only the original versions, which is probably better for the fidelity. Let's see, you've got Leona Anderson, whose work was unironically released on Horrible Records; the manipulated-piano duo Ferrante and Teicher, who appear three times on this album; Wolfgang Neuss' "Moritatensanger," "Mack The Knife" in kraut-speak; and others, including Kovacs himself, who performs "Indian Love Call" with Adams, as well as his own "Hot Cakes and Sausage."

Next Ernie Kovacs at WPTZ in 1952 Nationally known comedian Ernie Kovacs came to WPTZ in January of 1950 from radio station WTTM in nearby Trenton, NJ, where Ernie grew up. He pioneered the use of blackouts and trick photography in TV comedy.His first show was PICK YOUR IDEAL, a weekly fashion show. Ernie showed up for the audition dressed in his shorts and a barrel. He got the job. Then he did another show entitled, "Deadline for Dinner, an afternoon program." It was supposed to be a straight show, but Kovacs played it anything but straight. The chef was Albert Mathis (chef and manager of the Gulph Mills Country Club) and they got into a funny bit and literally forgot what they were cooking. At Channel 3, Kovacs hosted several different programs including "Three to Get Ready." It was originally on from 7:30 am to 9 am. Eventually, it expanded to two full hours starting at 7 am. The show premiered on November 27, 1950 and is reported to have been the very first early morning wake-up television show anywhere. Ironic that a newspaper listing at that time (The Evening Bulletin) described the show as "news, music, weather." Andy McKay thought that this program was the best of Ernie Kovacs at WPTZ. The concept was to turn on Channel 3 and get ready to go to work. Sort of a local Today show, but it turned into a Kovacs vehicle. This show, according to Andy McKay was a "mish-mash" from other programs. A piece of this, a bit of that.

The CD, titled The Ernie Kovacs Record Collection , is being produced by Irwin Chusid, a major Kovacs fan (and supporter of this website), the man who brought us the CD (re-)releases of the music of Raymond Scott and of Esquivel. The CD will be released by Varese-Sarabande Records. The original release date was to have been April, but the people at V-S "got" how special and exciting this CD is and pushed the release date back to devote more time and effort for promoting it. For one gag that lasted only a few seconds he spent $12,000: when a salesman (played by Kovacs) slapped the fender of a used car, the car fell though a platform. According to Kovacs, 'Eighty percent of what I do is in the category of sight gags, no pantomime. I work on the incongruity of sight against sound."
