Oakland picked up Keith Foulke, minor league righthander Joe Valentine and backup catcher Mark Johnson, while Chicago added Billy Koch and two players to be named later. Baseball America has learned that one of those players is lefthander Neal Cotts, and the other prospect will be finalized after the major league Rule 5 draft on Dec. 16. The A's also received cash in the deal to equalize the projected 2003 salaries for Foulke and Koch. Though Koch set a career high for saves in 2002 while Foulke had his worst season since becoming a closer, Koch has been a bit overrated while Foulke has been underrated. Koch throws 5-7 mph harder than Foulke, but Foulke has been more statisically dominant, averaging fewer hits, fewer walks and more strikeouts per nine innings than Koch over the course of their careers.

Extractions: Main April 05, 2004 Billy Goat? Billy Koch came into the ninth with a 7-3 lead to nail down Guillen's first win as a manager. Politte had walked the first two batters, then Koch gave up a double to Benito Santiago (new acquistions seem to be doing well today). It's 7-4 now with men on 2nd and third. Koch comes back and strikes out Guiel. One down, two on. Update : And Koch is out of the game. Marte is in for the save. Guillen made the move because Pena pinch hit with Matt Stairs. Now Stairs is out of the game. But I guess the closer role isn't that clear cut on the White Sox. I think that's a good thing. Update : Of course, it helps if the pitcher you bring in keeps the ball in the park. Mendy Lopez takes Marte deep to right center to tie the game at 7. The Royals fans are going wild. Update : They're going even more wild now. Beltran smacks a two-run shot off Marte to seal the victory for the Royals. Not the way Guillen wanted Koch and Marte to work together. Tony Pena looks like he just won the World Series. A great way for the Royals to start the season. Correction : Koch did not walk the first two batters of the inning. Politte did. Sorry about that.

Extractions: New Toronto Blue Jays reliever Scott Schoeneweis was sitting in the bullpen during a recent game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field when a fan seated behind him started with the catcalls. ''I heard someone shout, 'Schoeneweis, you're a bum,''' the left-hander recalled. ''I thought, 'I can't believe they're calling me a bum here.''' Schoeneweis turned around to find the fan was actually former White Sox teammate Billy Koch. Koch, who had a bitter parting with the Blue Jays during spring training, was making good on a promise to return to the ballpark and root for the Devil Rays. Wearing a Devil Rays cap and a jersey with right fielder Aubrey Huff's name on the back, Koch, who lives nearby in Clearwater Beach, Fla., took a group of 240 schoolchildren to the game. ''Maybe [Rays GM Chuck LaMar] is up in the box and he'll see me and offer me a contract,'' said Koch, who saved 110 games for the Jays from 1999-2001 but insists he won't sign with another team because ''I'm going to make the Toronto Blue Jays pay every cent of my [$950,000] salary.'' DGA members, corporate sponsors and guests recently turned out for the First Annual Howard W. Koch Memorial DGA Golf Tournament which was held on the beautiful Wilshire Country Club course, located in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles. Established in 1919, the Wilshire Country Club was designed by Norman Macbeth and has played host to the L.A. Open, the Senior PGA and LPGA Tournaments. The DGA Golf Tournament is a charity event designed to benefit the Directors Guild Foundation which provides financial support to members who are experiencing financial difficulties. Although this is actually the fifth annual DGA Golf Tournament, it was recently renamed in honor of Howard W. Koch, who passed away earlier this year after having served as the Chairman of the Directors Guild Foundation for almost 20 years. With an estimated $35,000 raised for the Foundation, many viewed this year's tournament as the most successful ever. Second-place team: Martin P. Ewing, Tom McConnell, Brian J. O'Sullivan and Kim Kurumada.

Moczulski, AP Toronto's Koch was a Goat named Billy after Saturday's woeful outing. Roto Roost tidbits SATURDAY'S ROTO MONSTER Entering Saturday's game, the Twins had lost eight in a row, including five straight to lowly Tampa Bay. Putrid offensive production was largely to blame for the team's slide from the AL Central catbird seat. But Corey Koskie and Brian Buchanan finally got untracked, and the Twins halted their slide. On an evening lacking truly Monstrous performances, Koskie is your Roto Monster after going 2-for-4 with two homers and four RBI. He broke a 2-for-26 tailspin while improving his season power numbers to 20 long balls and 75 RBI. Buchanan went a lofty 4-for-4, homering once and scoring three runs. If the Twins can build on this production, they could creep back into the playoff picture.

In the case of the As, its saves. Run Isringhausens saves up, let him move along and be someone elses financial problemwell take the compensation. Run Billy Kochs saves up, and send him to an organization that cant even identify its own good relievers for Keith Foulke, Joe Valentine, and a patient catcher with some upside. Its a good plan, and as long as some GMs pay more attention to baseballs arcane accounting system than performance, someone will always overpay for a proven closer. Nobody in the history of the game reached 100 saves faster than Koch did. That fact and two bucks will get him a latte in T.O., now that the Jays have sent him to the A's. Despite three-digit heat, Koch goofs around with five different pitches. Unless hes as stubborn as his billy-goat beard implies, hell pare back the menu options and rise to the ranks of the elite.
