Thank you. April 6, 2005 SO... once again I've fallen behind with my news, but truly, so much has been happening that I have not been home enough to update this website!! The most exciting step forward these past few months has been the travelling I have been doing between NY and LA. My manager, Marsy Robinson, has been doing wonderful things for me and has really helped me start to establish myself in the singer/songwriter community that is developing out in LA. Thanks to a great club owner named Marko, I have been lucky enough to play at one of the best acoustic venues out in LA called Hotel Cafe. My first gig at Hotel Cafe was a bit of an industry showcase where I announced myself to the record industry in LA for the first time. I received great response which allowed and encouraged me to come back this past month and perform again. Amazingly, I got to play in front of Amos Lee, who, if you have not heard of him, is truly a remarkable performer who deserves every bit of success and fame that he is getting. I was blown away by the truth of his beautiful voice and soulfulness- check him out -

Faced with the squalor of a squatter's existence and the ravages of HIV, these incredible young heroes and heroines somehow build family and community with passion and style. Larson had an enormous amount on his mind and in his heart, and as a result Rent is imperfect, but only because it so brims and rocks with excess enthusiasms and energy.
FringeNYC 2004 Reviews The show s creators, joshua kobak, Mickey Fisher, and Katy Pfaffl brilliantly combine beat The same could be said for joshua kobak, who plays Jericho. http://www.nytheatre.com/nytheatre/archweb/f04review_11.htm
Extractions: reviewed by Eric Winick In Fringeland, where the glass is always half-full, even the wildly uneven shows can be worth ones time and effort. Such is the case with Go Robot Go , a cautionary tale about the dehumanization of contemporary society; though the satire is a bit too wide-ranging to be incisive, theres plenty to distract from the thinness of the plot, and the fact that, despite its subject and novel approach, the piece isnt saying anything particularly new. Robot concerns Roberta (playwright Julie Shavers), a mousy, awkward assistant to a hilariously self-obsessed celebrity designer (Shari Hellman). Forced to answer phones and endure the endless rants of a cynical colleague (Eileen Rivera), Roberta finds little solace beyond the workplace; her boyfriend is a none-too-bright stripper with an Elvis fixation (William Cantera), and her dysfunctional family (Chris Hury and Amy Mapother) is straight out of a John Waters film. Enter American Man and Woman (Max Darwin and Laurel Keane), a pair of beautiful hucksters who, through a series of television commercials, exhort Roberta to change her life by swallowing a purple pill that promises knowledge of fucking everything. Shavers and director Daniel OBrien have wisely added a live band to the proceedings, and the playful, bouncy score (by Philip Carluzzo) keeps things gliding along, even when the play begins to outstay its welcome. Characters rush on and off in frenzied bursts, serve as walls and furniture, and occasionally appear on a live video feedan enormously effective device that adds needed intimacy within the cavernous playing space. For the most part, these accoutrements complement Shaverss dialogue nicely. The decision to have actors perform robotic movements behind certain scenes is less successful, as it tends to pull focus, and does little to enhance our understanding of the play.

Extractions: 14. Amethyst (live) Above and Beneath Organic and Creative After investigating the liner notes of "Above and Beneath," I came across the statement "This album was made without synthesizers." This struck me as odd, seeing as how synthesizers are rife among today's composers and songwriters; they're the norm, the standard. And after just one spin, "Above and Beneath" proved that music, sans synthesizers, can be something more than folk. "Above and Beneath" is organic, sometimes folky, sometimes funky, but always good. If comparisons do any justice, swim is a band that creates and encompasses sounds like that of the musical nuances and ingenuities of Sting. All songs are written and produced by the lead singer, Joshua Kobak. Kobak not only is a singer/songwriter, musician, and producer, but he is also an actor. His theatre training does show its roots a bit in his songs through his phrasing and his strong voice - almost as if, in some instances, his songs were mini-musicals wandering around without costumes and scenic backdrops. And, believe it or not, it works.

'Rent' & Rave When the musical opens, it is Christmas Eve, and Mark (Matt Caplan) is attempting to lift the spirits of his HIVpositive roommate Roger (joshua kobak), http://www.dailyemerald.com/archive/v101/3/000406/rent.html
Extractions: Part Broadway musical, part rock music video, part social commentary, Jonathan Larson's critically acclaimed "Rent" delivered all of these with passion and precision Tuesday night at the Hult Center. The 1996 Pulitzer Prize-winning story traces the lives of a group of artists over the course of a year, as they struggle to survive the hopelessness of living in New York's East Village. The group is attempting to save their dilapidated apartment building from building owner Benny (Brian M. Love), who has threatened to turn it into a cyber arts studio and evict the current tenants. When the musical opens, it is Christmas Eve, and Mark (Matt Caplan) is attempting to lift the spirits of his HIV-positive roommate Roger (Joshua Kobak), who is mired in depression after his girlfriend's suicide. Notable performances included Erin Keaney as Mark's overly dramatic ex-girlfriend Maureen. Keaney's rendition of "Over the Moon" had the audience in stitches. Shaun Earl's performance as Tom Collin's drag queen lover Angel is also outstanding.
Extractions: Rent Jonathan Larson's Rent returns to Pittsburgh for a one-week engagement. This tour (known as the "Benny" tour) started in La Jolla in July 1997 and has traveled the U.S. ever since, with many cast changes. This Tony Award winning musical about struggling artists coping with"living in America, at the end of the millennium", battling personal demons, drugs, and AIDS, and trying to love and survive without selling out, has had great success and become a touchstone for young people all over the world. Larson's music and lyrics are indestructible. Driving rock, ballads, bluesy soul tunes, and even a tango, the music is loud, but in the case of this production, not too loud. When performed well, Larson's creation is a show that is incredibly energetic, charming, and clever. The cast members on this tour stop achieved this goal with varying degrees of success. It is always disheartening to open a program, especially on opening night, and see multiple slips of paper fluttering into your lap. There were five of those notes, reading "At this performance, the role of ..." on this opening night - including replacements for two principles. Marcus Chaney was thrust into the spotlight as Tom Collins and Curtis Cregan left the ensemble to play Mark Cohen. Chaney was a delight, a natural actor with a gorgeous voice. Cregan left much to be desired as Mark. He was well rehearsed, but stiff in his acting. He did shine, however, in the light-hearted "Tango Maureen" with Jacqueline B. Arnold as Joanne. I got the impression that Cregan is talented, but perhaps not suited to or ready for the role of Mark. Arnold also showed potential in her other numbers, but she needed more projection and better enunciation so her lines could be heard.
