Extractions: Alumni Sounds STEPHEN FLAHERTY Stephen composed his first score at age 14. He studied at CCM with Lehman Engel, founder of the BMI Work-shop, which he entered immediately after graduation. Since 1983, he has collaborated with Lynn Ahrens (as lyricist), creating works for theatre, film, and concert stages across the country and internationally. Their most recent musical, A Man of No Importance, opened at Lincoln Center last Fall. Their adaptation of the stories of Dr. Seuss, The Seussical, premiered on Broadway in 2000. In 1998, they won the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Ragtime and received two Grammy nominations for recordings of the score. In the same year they received two Academy Award nominations and two Golden Globe nominations for the animated feature Anastasia .
