Extractions: John F. Kennedy, Jr. November 25, 1960 - - - July 17, 1999 Born in Washington, DC and son of the late assasinated President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis . John Jr. or "John John" was known as one of the more responsible and gentlemanly of the Kennedy family and has often been compared to his late father. Nothing made a nation's heart cry more then when John Jr. at the age of 3 raised his hand to his head to salute his father at his funeral. "I was under that very desk 35 years ago, and I could tell you there's barely room for a 3-year-old." John Jr. took his bar exam to become an attorney several times before passing and was involved in politics. He was also the founder and editor of George Magazine, a political magazine named after the first President of the United States. He even visited Cuba on a private trip on the 35th anniversary of the Cuban missile crisis that had caused his father a very stressful 2 weeks as the world watched for possible World War III. He had dated Hollywood actress Daryl Hannah which was very high profile. He later met Carolyn Bessette, a Calvin Klein Public Relations executive. In 1996 they were married and he broke the hearts of many women since he was considered one of the world's most eligible bachelors. They lived in downtown Manhattan free of security guards and always being polite and keeping their cool when bombarded by the press and cameras. He always addressed the most controversial questions with a quip and great sense of humor and was in fact a very humble person. It was often thought and hoped that he would return to the White House as President of the United States one day.

Extractions: Used Car Classifieds Reactions from celebrities across the country to the tragic death of John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy in a plane crash off Martha's Vineyard ranged from shock, to heartfelt grief, to ambivalence. Some said the incident was no more important than the passing of anyone else they did not know and chided the amount of attention it was given by the media. My first reaction was 'this is ridiculous ... he's just a guy. What did he ever do?' And then I saw Dan Rather actually choked up while reading the news that the plane was missing and thought ... hmmm ... Over the next week, all of those morbid Kennedy tributes aired ...You know, the ones where they detail the whole tragic history of the entire family, and I slowly realized what this loss represents to America. Its like our generations assassination, the loss of promise, and it also opens all of the old JFK wounds that so many people have.

Extractions: John F. Kennedy, Jr.: The Death of a Good son The sudden and unfortunate death of any "good son" or "good daughter" makes the heavens wail, and the earth overflow with tears. People of all climes and races, men and women, boys and girls of different persuasions and faiths mourn the good son, the good daughter. Remarkably, humankind does this even without having neither seen nor touched the remarkable person they behold. I am delighted by the fact despite all the conflicts besmirching our planet, amidst all the angst, beyond most of the ancient and currents hatreds, a universal and caring stream of consciousness and rivers of sympathy flow to create an ocean of shared, pan-human sensitivity and mourning when a good person dies. This disposition is evident across almost all ethnic groups and religions. Africans, especially, have a good sense for shared communal mourning; one for all. I remember growing up as a kid in my south eastern Nigeria Igbo community and witnessing such shared concerns; it's another angle to the African wise saying "It takes a village!" Hence, once the saddening tragedy of a "good son" John F. Kennedy, Jr., his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and Lauren Bessette, her older sister was announced first on MSNBC by veteran reporter Robert Hager on a beautiful summer Saturday morning of July 17, 1999, it was an unfolding tragedy which touched many, the village.

Kennedy Delivers JFK Jr. Eulogy NEW YORK, Jul 23, 1999 (AP Online via COMTEX) At the stately 126-year-old church where his mother often found solace, John F. Kennedy Jr. was remembered today as a man with ''great promise of things to come'' who, like his father, ''had every gift but length of years.'' ''For a thousand days, he was a husband who adored the wife who became his perfect soul-mate,'' Sen. Edward Kennedy said in his eulogy at the Church of St. Thomas More. ''He was still becoming the person he would be, and doing it by the beat of his own drummer. He had only just begun. There was in him a great promise of things to come.'' An invitation-only group of about 350 people, including President Clinton and his family, streamed into the Roman Catholic church for the private, 1 1/2 hour memorial service for JFK Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. Dr. Richard Freeman and his wife, Ann, the stepfather and mother of Kennedy's wife and sister-in-law Lauren Bessette, were among the first to arrive, walking quietly into the church about 90 minutes before the 11 a.m. Mass. Kennedy's sister, Caroline, and the senator arrived later.
Extractions: The Kennedy Curse , by Edward Klein, is the latest entry. The premise is simple: "The Kennedy Curse is the result of the destructive collision between the Kennedys' fantasy of omnipotence their need to get away with things that others cannot and the cold, hard realities of life." Sen. Ted Kennedy once wondered "whether some awful curse did actually hang over all the Kennedys." Of course, the distinguished Democrat from Massachusetts has been the author of many of his own problems. A case in point is the Palm Beach incident of 1991, when the famous senator went romping with his son Patrick (now a Rhode Island congressman) and William Kennedy Smith. Klein is the first writer to have gone through the boxes of sworn statements, depositions, and other official documents associated with the ensuing rape trial. His chapter on the events of March 29, 1991 and what took place afterward are riveting.

Extractions: Newsweek does another bad impression of the National Enquirer in this article by Rick Marin with Tessa Namuth, T. Trent Gegax, Yahlin Chang and Claudia Kalb which dissects Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy like a bug under a microscope. The main theme of the piece is to explain to the unwashed masses of single American women just "how did she get him anyway?" Apparently the writers give no credit whatsoever to John F. Kennedy, Jr., for the decision to get married. Ms. Bessette-Kennedy is lauded for "bagging The Most Eligible Bachelor Alive". "That she wound up a Kennedy is no accident. Carolyn has always dated for success." "Poor bastard never had a chance." "Either way, she had managed to place herself in his orbit." "Carolyn Bessette followed some of the Rules' to snag John-John." "Carolyn's genius was in not acting like she was out to catch him." And "how did she get him anyway?"

Extractions: Associated Press WOODS HOLE The Kennedy family gathered on Cape Cod today to say a final farewell to John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife and sister-in-law, found dead in the wreckage of his plane off Martha's Vineyard. Two visitors pay quiet respect at a John F. Kennedy Memorial in Canton, Ohio. Family members were to board the Navy Destroyer USS Briscoe, bringing with them the cremated remains of Mr. Kennedy, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and Lauren Bessette, according to Bruce Fisher, the pilot of the 563-foot ship. The ashes were to be scattered off Martha's Vineyard. Shortly before 7 a.m., a chaplain boarded the Coast Guard cutter Sanibel at Woods Hole. Three folded American flags and three wreaths with red, yellow and white flowers were also placed on the ship. Coast Guard Captain Russel Webster said the Sanibel was to meet up with the Briscoe, then return to Woods Hole to pick up the Kennedy family. John F. Kennedy Jr.'s sister, Caroline Kennedy, left her home on Long Island early today to fly to Cape Cod for the ceremony. The somber ceremony was the latest step in a tragedy that has gripped the nation for nearly a week.

Extractions: Woods Hole, Mass., July 22 Family members gathered on a Navy destroyer off Marthas Vineyard on Thursday for a private service where the ashes of John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and Lauren Bessette were scattered at sea. JFK Jr., his body cremated overnight, had long expressed a wish to be buried at sea, and his late father had earlier described the family fascination with being at sea as going back from whence we came. The service was held aboard the USS Briscoe, a Navy destroyer now off the coast of Cape Cod, a government source said on condition of anonymity. The ashes of all three victims were scattered at sea. The sea has long pulled at the Kennedy family, as expressed in a 1962 speech by the late President John F. Kennedy.

Extractions: A small plane piloted by John F. Kennedy Jr. took off from Fairfield, New Jersey, at 8:38 p.m., Friday, July 16, 1999, heading toward Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. His wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and her sister, Lauren, were passengers on the scheduled 200-mile trip. The plane was expected to arrive about 10 p.m. but disappeared off radar at 9:40 p.m. Five days later, following a massive air and sea search, the bodies were recovered from the plane wreckage in 116 feet of water roughly 7 miles off Martha's Vineyard. The next day, following an autopsy, the cremated remains of John F. Kennedy Jr., 38, his wife Carolyn, 33, and her sister Lauren, 34, were scattered at sea from the USS destroyer Briscoe with family members present, not far from where the plane had crashed. A private memorial Mass was held in New York City for John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn, on Friday, July 23, a week after their deaths. About 350 family members, friends and associates, including President Bill Clinton, were in attendance. This is the eulogy delivered during the Mass by John's uncle, Senator Edward M. Kennedy. Thank you, President and Mrs. Clinton and Chelsea, for being here today. You've shown extraordinary kindness throughout the course of this week.
Tribute To The Kennedy And Bessette Families For Immediate Release TRIBUTE TO THE kennedy AND bessette FAMILIES tragic deaths of John kennedy, Jr., his wife carolyn, and her sister Lauren bessette. http://dodd.senate.gov/press/Speeches/106_99/0721.htm
Extractions: TRIBUTE TO THE KENNEDY AND BESSETTE FAMILIES July 21, 1999 Mr. President, I want to address the Senate for a few moments about a topic I know has consumed the attention of each and every one of us in this Chamber, indeed all Americans, over the past several days, and that is the tragic deaths of John Kennedy, Jr., his wife Carolyn, and her sister Lauren Bessette. Permit me, if you will, to engage in a little regional chauvinism, for there are few things in life so pleasant as a New England summer day. It is glorious to behold. The warm sweet air, the cold waters of its rivers and lakes and ocean seem to command a celebration of the very simple pleasures of life. On this past Saturday, though, the inherent joy of a New England summer season dissolved throughout America with the news that these three young people were lost off the New England coast. Lost on a day that seemed meant for gladness, not grief. Lost in waters that should have welcomed pleasure, not disaster. For one family, the Kennedy family, a moment of a family's supreme joya weddingwas snatched greedily by the hand of a very cruel fate, indeed.

Extractions: NECROFILE The unknown mourner Nobody knows my name. And nobody ever will. Yet nobody loved John F. Kennedy Jr. more than me. I am the Unknown Mourner. You wouldn't recognize me, even though I was on TV last week. Yes I was! I was on CNN. That was me, in the dress and sunhat, standing behind the police barricade, a faceless face in a crowd of faceless people. Despite the fact that I knew John John intimately, I, like the rest, was allowed only to look in the direction of the church up the street in order to pay my respects to the man we loved so well. However, the difference between all of those people in the crowd and me is that JFK Jr. loved me back , even if it was only just for one night back in 1993. After his recent, tragic, death, I made repeated phone calls to the Kennedy Family compound, with the intention of explaining my importance in JFK's life as a contributor to the great Kennedy myth. Like his father before him, JFK was handsome, virile and a lover of the ladies. And oh, how he loved me that one afternoon, after I accidentally bumped into him rollerblading in Central Park. Do the Kennedys recognize my part, my role in the great story that is Camelot? Did they even think to invite me to the funeral? No, they left me to weep in private on a hot dusty sidewalk, lost in the rabble, forgotten in my private pain. It was like John John never even told them of my existence. It was like he had never even mentioned my name to Ted, Caroline or the rest of the compound denizens.
