Kennedy, Jr., his wife and her sister have announced all three are now presumed dead. They have begun a recovery operation to locate the wreckage and bodies. The plane, piloted by Kennedy, apparently crashed into the waters just off the coast of Martha's Vineyard late Friday night. On board were Kennedy; Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, his wife; and Lauren Bessette, Carolyn's older sister. President Clinton, speaking this morning at a ceremony honoring the Women's World Cup team, reflected on Mr. Kennedy's and the entire family's contribution to America.

On Friday morning July 16, 1999, he had a doctor appointment at Lenox Hill Hospital (thank you Stacy Weinstein and Mark Ferrara for that shot). John spent most of the day in business meetings. He went home, changed his clothes (a white tank top, white slacks, and a backwards baseball cap), played with their dog, Friday, then hopped in his white Hyundai convertible to the airport.

I saw an interview with Michael on cable television a few days before the book came out and immediately knew that I wanted to read this. I have read many books on The Kennedy family and was particularly interested in reading about his relationship with Carolyn Bessette. Because of the language and sex I would only recommend that adults read this book. I don't think it is suitable for teens. Also, because the book is so short I don't feel it is worth the $26 retail price. I was able to get it with a discount, but if I had it to do over I would just wait to read the library copy. It was a good book, but it's not one that I want to keep in my collection.

In the face of all that, Bessette, 33, tried to keep a low profile. She showed up at fashion shows and shopped and made the scene with her husband, the publisher of George magazine, when that scene was not stuffily political. She went along to Kennedy family gatherings at Hyannis Port and had dinner with her husband's aunt, Lee Radziwill. Often, friends said, she sought counsel on being a Kennedy and a camera magnet from her sister-in-law, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. And this worked. Nearly three years after her marriage, she had succeeded in shaking her media hounds. She became studiedly boring. While blond and as coolly alluring as ever, she popped up seldomly, spoke in public even less and always, when making an entrance, allowed her husband to grip her hand tightly.

Kennedy Jr.'s marriage to Carolyn Bessette Kennedy was crumbling amid suspicions of affairs, drugs and depression when the couple died in a plane crash, excerpts from a new book reveal. The Camelot heir had moved out of the couple's loft and was living alone in a hotel room before the crash off Martha's Vineyard on July 16, 1999, Vanity Fair's Edward Klein writes in his new book, "The Kennedy Curse." "We've become like total strangers," John told a pal two days before his death. "I've had it with her. It's got to stop. Otherwise, we're headed for divorce." The feud culminated in a bizarre quarrel on the afternoon of the fateful flight, when Carolyn caused a crucial delay by insisting on having a time-consuming pedicure, Klein writes in the book, which is excerpted in the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair.

Kennedy T hank you, President and Mrs. Clinton and Chelsea, for being here today. You've shown extraordinary kindness throughout the course of this week. Once, when they asked John what he would do if he went into politics and was elected president, he said: "I guess the first thing is call up Uncle Teddy and gloat." I loved that. It was so like his father. From the first day of his life, John seemed to belong not only to our family, but to the American family. The whole world knew his name before he did. A famous photograph showed John racing across the lawn as his father landed in the White House helicopter and swept up John in his arms. When my brother saw that photo, he exclaimed, "Every mother in the United States is saying, 'Isn't it wonderful to see that love between a son and his father, the way that John races to be with his father.' Little do they know - that son would have raced right by his father to get to that helicopter." But John was so much more than those long ago images emblazoned in our minds. He was a boy who grew into a man with a zest for life and a love of adventure. He was a pied piper who brought us all along. He was blessed with a father and mother who never thought anything mattered more than their children.

But this wasn't the Normandy invasion, it was a wedding, and something more important has been overlooked: how incredibly romantic it must have been. The setting was one of the wild, unspoiled sea islands off Georgiato visitors, they seem like remnants of the New World as it was before its discovery. This one, Cumberland Island, is inhabited by armadillos, wild boar and wild horses. Spanish moss hangs from its ancient oaks. There is a tiny wooden chapel, where the ceremony was held by candlelight. Crickets sang in the grass. Could there be a more beautiful and tender place to hold a wedding? Give John F. Kennedy Jr., 35, and Carolyn Bessette, 30, credit. They succeeded in keeping their marriage on Sept. 21 a secret from the press and saved themselves from an attack of helicopters that would have rivaled something out of Apocalypse Now. Of course, they could not cover their tracks forever, and the tabloids have already discovered them on their honeymoon in Turkey. But they accomplished more than just the news blackout. Give them credit for holding a wedding that had dignity, style, mystery and joy, in the manner of the groom's mother. This occasion may have been the most important of Kennedy's adult life so far, publicly as well as privately, and he carried it off with an imagination and delicacy that not everyone assumed he possessed.
