Extractions: (1929-1982), actor and princess of Monaco Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 12, 1929, into a rich Irish Catholic family, Grace Kelly was educated in convent and private schools. She then attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, working as a photographer's model to pay her tuition. After several seasons of acting in summer stock, she made her Broadway debut in November 1949 in August Strindberg's The Father. She appeared in a number of television dramas in the early 1950s. Her first film role, a small one, was in Fourteen Hours (1951), but the next year she appeared as Gary Cooper's Quaker wife in High Noon and her career began to blossom. Signed to a seven-year contract by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, she was featured in Mogambo (1953) and starred in Dial M for Murder and Rear Window, both in 1954. In December 1954 The Country Girl, a screen version of the play by Clifford Odets, was released, and she won an Academy Award for her performance. Other pictures followed, including To Catch a Thief (1955) and High Society (1956), but her movie career was cut short, to the mixed distress and delight of her fans, when in 1956 she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco and retired from the screen. She was active in charitable and cultural work and became the mother of three children. She resisted attempts to lure her back into performing, although she lent her narration to one or two documentary films and gave occasional poetry readings, and in 1976 she joined the Board of 20th Century-Fox Film Corporation. She died on September 14, 1982, in Monte Carlo after an automobile accident.

Extractions: 262; from Hartwin Alfred Gebhardt: Kameeldoring (Afrikaans). Kameldorn (German). Literally: "camel-thorn" tree. Sort of the unofficial National tree of Namibia; the wood is very hard, ideal for 'braais' (grilling). A Namibian/German adaptation of the song Horst Wessell (later a popular Nazi marching song) was the Namibian hymn until independence in 1989, and is still sung defiantly by the (mostly white Afrikaaner) Rugby crowds, in the original German. It starts "So hart wie Kameldornholz ist unser Land..." (as hard as camel thorn wood is our land/country).
