Samuel Leroy Jackson (born December 21, 1948) is an American actor. He has starred in many Hollywood movies. His performance in Jungle Fever was so acclaimed, the 1991 Cannes Film Festival created a Supporting Actor award just for him. Along with that award, he has won many others including a Silver Berlin Bear, A BAFTA Film Award, and two Independent Spirit Awards. He is perhaps best known for his roles in the Spike Lee movies Do The Right Thing, Mo' Better Blues and Jungle Fever, the Quentin Tarantino movies Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown, and as Jedi Mace Windu in the prequel Star Wars Trilogy. Thus, he is usually cast into roles that involve a cool, controlled, "in-the-know" black man. His roles most always involve a memorable line delivery; and Jackson's trademark voice inflection lend heavily to this key attribute. He received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Jules Winnfield in 'Pulp Fiction.

Today, though, heâs shooting scenes featuring an actor who is a set-up for a larger Marvel continuity, and itâs exciting because Iâm hoping this character can start showing up in other films, and weâll start seeing Marvel Studios creating a larger world, one that exists outside the frames of the individual movies. Raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, by his no-nonsense mother and grandmother, Jackson took school seriously and was accepted at Atlanta's Morehouse College as an architecture student. Jackson, who had struggled with a stutter since childhood, followed a speech therapist's advice and auditioned for a college musical. He landed a part, found he enjoyed performing enough to pursue further acting gigs, and eventually switched his major to drama. Jackson's family, however, remained unconvinced of the professional merits of his new vocation until a Southern fast-food chain, Krystal Hamburgers, cast him in a television commercial in which he smacked his lips while eating an onion burger. His first actor's paycheck was in the bank. Jackson graduated from college in 1972 (despite a temporary expulsion for participating in a student demonstration), and moved to New York to ply his craft in more serious projects.

He attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, and in 1969 he was briefly suspended for taking several members of the college's board of trustees, including Martin Luther King, Sr., hostage during a sit-in to protest the absence of black trustees and a black studies curriculum. Graduating in 1972 with a degree in theater arts, Samuel L. Jackson remained in Atlanta, finding work in television commercials and regional theatrical productions, as well as a small role in his first feature film, "Together for Days". In 1976, Samuel L. Jackson moved to New York City where he became involved with the Negro Ensemble Company, performing in several notable productions. It was during this time Samuel was introduced to Spike Lee, who later cast him in four films. In 1980 Samuel married his college sweetheart, actress LaTanya Richardson, whom he had met while attending drama classes at Morehouse's sister school, Spelman College. Samuel L. Jackson began to receive international attention 1991 when director Spike Lee cast him as the crack-addicted Gator in "Jungle Fever", a part which won him a special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actor. Over the next five years Jackson went on to costar in more than 20 feature films and several made-for-TV movies.
