His performance in Jungle Fever was so acclaimed, the 1991 Cannes Film Festival created a Supporting Actor award just for him. Along with that award, he has won many others including a Silver Berlin Bear, A BAFTA Film Award, and two Independent Spirit Awards. He is perhaps best known for his roles in the Spike Lee movies Do The Right Thing, Mo' Better Blues and Jungle Fever, the Quentin Tarantino movies Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown, and as Jedi Mace Windu in the prequel Star Wars Trilogy. This is a pretty big tidbit, and as far as I can tell, this is an exclusive. I haven’t seen any mention of this anywhere online, but it’s exciting news, and I have to share it with you guys. Right now, if I had to wager on whether or not IRON MAN was going to be one of next summer’s big films, I’d say it will be. It seems like Jon Favreau has done everything right so far, and I’m hearing really exciting things about the action sequences and the casting, and I’ve been sold on Robert Downey Jr. since the moment he was announced. Today, though, he’s shooting scenes featuring an actor who is a set-up for a larger Marvel continuity, and it’s exciting because I’m hoping this character can start showing up in other films, and we’ll start seeing Marvel Studios creating a larger world, one that exists outside the frames of the individual movies. This is a major step towards making that AVENGERS movie we’ve been hearing about. So who’s the actor? Who’s the character? Sam Jackson. Nick Fury.

Jackson had immersed himself so completely in his 30 previous roles that moviegoers rarely recognized him from one film to the next. Raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, by his no-nonsense mother and grandmother, Jackson took school seriously and was accepted at Atlanta's Morehouse College as an architecture student. Jackson, who had struggled with a stutter since childhood, followed a speech therapist's advice and auditioned for a college musical. He landed a part, found he enjoyed performing enough to pursue further acting gigs, and eventually switched his major to drama. Jackson's family, however, remained unconvinced of the professional merits of his new vocation until a Southern fast-food chain, Krystal Hamburgers, cast him in a television commercial in which he smacked his lips while eating an onion burger. His first actor's paycheck was in the bank. Jackson graduated from college in 1972 (despite a temporary expulsion for participating in a student demonstration), and moved to New York to ply his craft in more serious projects.

Jackson began to receive international attention 1991 when director Spike Lee cast him as the crack-addicted Gator in "Jungle Fever", a part which won him a special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actor. Over the next five years Jackson went on to costar in more than 20 feature films and several made-for-TV movies.
