Extractions: by SARAH ROWLAND At the peak of Boston's comedy craze, Bobcat Goldthwait's live shows would sometimes only consist of him sobbing mournfully while he read a Dear John letter, or screaming neurotically as he gutted fish on stage. His Andy Kaufman-inspired antics coupled with his instantly recognizable ear-piercing shrill landed the 20-year-old a spot on Late Night With David Letterman. You'd think that attracting that kind of national attention could only benefit Massachusetts' flourishing stand-up scene. Yes? No. In When Stand Up Stood Out, a compelling documentary about the early '80s comedy explosion in Beantown, filmmaker Fran Solomita singles out Goldthwait's guest appearance as a turning point in the demise of authentically raw stand-up. As the competition for talk show gigs, high-powered agents and movie deals grew more fierce, performers and club owners started turning on each other. Goldthwait hasn't seen the film yet, but he remembers how he was treated by some of his colleagues who were jealous of his sudden success. "I was very aware that people were upset with me," he says over the phone from Richmond, Virginia. "And it hurt because some of the guys I dealt with, I thought were my friends. I'd walk into a room and they'd all be quiet like I did something wrong. It was just really creepy. In hindsight, I don't know what I should have done - turned it down so their feelings wouldn't have been hurt?"

My stolen internet's been fine most of the time since my last post. The reason I haven't updated lately is that there was a significant break in the case I'm working on (need I remind you, my name is Axel Foleyrefer to the first post of the blog). I've been working with these two joker detectives from the Hollywood police force, Detective William "Billy" Randolph and his partner, Detective Sargeant John Taggart. At first they didn't want my help, since I tend to get them in trouble and, after all, I'm not even supposed to be working on this case (they got an angry call from my boss back in Detroit). Now, though, we're pretty chummy, and I think they're on board with my plan to expose this asshole Brit Victor Maitland for the crook he is. Things have settled down a bit now, so I should be able to update with more regularityI'm hoping every two to three days. Every day would be nice, but I'm not a fucking miracle worker, ok? I'm just a humble black detective from Detroit, Michigan, and I want to nail the guy who killed my goddamn friend.

Extractions: Celebrities hitting the red carpet for the premieres of their film is usually a big deal, especially when the movie is something is really excited to see. What we don't often get to see are the red carpet experiences of low budget, little known, extremely small release films directed by Bobcat Goldthwait. If you've never heard Bobcat talk in a normal voice and wonder what that's like, this might be worth your time. Otherwise keep right on moving. The film itself looks a bit disturbing. If your wondering what it's about, don't look any further than the show's onesheet: a man and a woman in bed with a dog. Yeah. Extractions: real player Sleeping Dogs Watch a scene from Bobcat Goldthwait's black comedy. New York-born Bobcat Goldthwait starred in three Police Academy movies in the mid-80s (his character, Zed, disappeared after Police Academy 4: Citizens On Patrol, along with the careers of everyone else who stayed onboard). On paper Goldthwait's second no-budget film as director, Sleeping Dogs (aka Stay in the US), seems to share similarities to those unsubtle Police Academy comedies: a young student fellates her pet dog and years later confesses the act to her boyfriend. Yet Sleeping Dogs is a character-based comedy that's a wry and sensitively-told tale. (After watching it you can see why Goldthwait was asked to support Nirvana on their final North American tour in 1993.)

Extractions: Bobcat Goldthwait made his name performing some of the most shocking stand-up comedy on the American circuit before reaching mainstream audiences as Zed in the 'Police Academy' films. He has since turned to directing, and his new film, 'Sleeping Dogs' , begins with a woman committing an unspeakable act on man's best friend before turning into one of the most touching and funny romantic comedies of the year.
Extractions: As a stand up comic, Bobcat Goldthwait has been compared to everyone from Lenny Bruce to a Warner Brothers cartoon on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Whether audiences consider him on the edge or over it, after a dozen films, his own HBO specials, a myriad of guest spots, and even a few talk show appearances that didn't result in legal action, love or hate him, Bobcat is still an original and never boring. Goldthwait started his comedy career right after high school when he moved to Boston to develop his act. After auditioning numerous times for The Late Show with David Letterman, he made his television debut on March 20,1982. From New York, Goldthwait took his stand-up to San Francisco and Los Angeles becoming a pop phenomenon. He soon appeared in a showcase with Whoopi Goldberg and landed his first film role, the gang leader "Zed" in Police Academy 2. Goldthwait logged two sequels, Police Academy 3 and 4, while building his filmography through roles in such features as "Scrooged" with Bill Murray, "Burgler" with Whoopi Goldberg and as the voice of "Pain" in the animated Disney film "Hercules". His trademark, multi-octave voice currently gives life to "Mr. Floppy" the puppet on the WB's "Unhappily Ever After". Goldthwait also lends his unique voice to a myriad of television shows and movies including "The Simpsons", "Beavis and Butthead", "Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist" and the new Disney series "Hercules" based on the feature. He has also host three of his own HBO specials as well as an episode of FOX's "Mad TV". Goldthwait has guest starred on such shows as The Larry Sanders Show, The John Larroqutte Show, ER, Sabrina: The Teenage Witch and Living Single.

Extractions: Most talkative Blow Scrooged Hercules One Crazy Summer ... Sleeping Dogs Lie During a 1994 interview with comedian Bobcat Goldthwait, The Today Show 's Katie Couric became so rattled at Goldthwait's paranoiac, high-decibel responses to her questions that she repeatedly entreated him to calm down and relax. After the commercial break, a frowning Couric looked directly at the guys in the NBC control room and asked, "Why didn't you tell me he always talks like that?" Indeed, Goldthwait has never spoken when shouting will do at least not professionally. A popular attraction on the comedy-cabaret circuit in the early '80s, Goldthwait made his film bow as gonzo gang leader Zed in Police Academy 2: The First Assignment (1985); he revived the character this time as a good-guy police cadet in two Police Academy sequels. Though we've been treated to generous helpings of Goldthwait's marine-raiders comic style in such TV series as Capitol Critters (1992) and Unhappily Ever After (1995), his funniest appearance thus far has been his briefest: in the satirical MTV special Medusa: Dare to Be Truthful (1992), he offers a 30-second parody of Kevin Costner 's aw-shucks cameo in Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991). Having previously directed his own concert video Is He Like That All the Time? (1988), Goldthwait extended his directorial activities to the 1994 theatrical feature
