Extractions: Died on 6 April 1996 A strikingly attractive, red-haired former stage actress of Anglo-Irish descent, Greer Garson appeared in films from 1939, mostly with MGM. Her relatively brief but affecting debut performance as Mrs. Chipping in the touching "Goodbye Mr. Chips" (1939) won her the first of seven Oscar nominations as Best Actress and made her an immediate star. After a lovely turn as the intelligent, playful Elizabeth in the comic "Pride and Prejudice" (1940), Garson inherited from Norma Shearer the mantle of Metro's resident prestige actress, suffering with genteel dignity through a series of A-budget soap operas. Garson regularly appeared on boxoffice polls of the top ten stars during the WWII years; indeed, Betty Grable was the only female star who surpassed Garson in popularity during this time. Garson formed an attractive romantic partnership with the stalwart and gentlemanly Walter Pidgeon, with whom she co-starred eight times. Their finest pairings came with "Madame Curie" (1943) and "That Forsyte Woman" (1949), though popular memory regularly casts them as Mr. and "Mrs. Miniver" (1942), a then-acclaimed but rather overrated tribute to the stiff-upper-lip spirit of the British in WWII, for which she earned an Oscar. Garson also played quite well opposite popular matinee idols Ronald Colman in the delicate, sentimental romance, "Random Harvest" (1942) and Gregory Peck in the lavish family saga, "The Valley of Decision" (1945). ... Editorials Greer Garson- Grace Under Fire By John Gibbon The epitome of a star, this dignified redheaded actress knew how to add spice to a movie when it needed it most. She was perhaps the one of most popular of MGMs leading ladies in the 1940s and always presented her characters with elegance and poise. Her success garnered her five consecutive Oscar nominations, a feat only matched by Bette Davis. Eileen Evelyn Garson was born a century ago, September 29, 1904, in a small house in London, England. Her father passed away shortly after her birth, but she and her mother struggled to survive through the poverty that seemed to haunt the Garson household. Garsons childhood was fairly normal; she had no thoughts of acting but excelled at her studies. She received a scholarship and was schooled at the University of London. Garson did quite well, earning a B.A. with honors in French and 18 th century literature. She had strong aspirations of becoming a teacher, but instead took a job with an advertising agency for some time. Acting was not something that held her interests high, but she decided to try to her luck acting in local theatrical productions. Changing her first name to Greer, a derivative of her mothers maiden name, MacGregor, she made her debut in 1932 in

It was with Pidgeon that she appeared in Mrs. Miniver (1942), a profitable wartime morale-booster which won Oscars for Garson, for supporting actress Teresa Wright , and for the picture itself. Legend has it that Garson's acceptance speech at the Academy Awards ceremony rambled on for 45 minutes; in fact, it wasn't any more than five or six minutes, but the speech compelled the Academy to limit the time any actor could spend in accepting the award. Though not overly fond of being so insufferably ladylike in her films, Garson stayed at MGM until her contract expired in 1954; it was surprising but at the same time refreshing to see her let her hair down in the 1956 Western Strange Lady in Town . In 1960, Garson received her seventh Oscar nomination for her astonishingly accurate portrayal of Eleanor Roosevelt in Sunrise at Campobello . After that, Garson was given precious few opportunities to shine in films, though she was permitted to exhibit her still-vibrant singing voice in her last picture, 1967's
