Extractions: George Ayoub is a columnist at The Independent. For those of us who have ever wanted to "just get away for a while," Dotcomguy may be your hero. Then again you may wonder just how happy an e-recluse can be. Dotcomguy has been holed up in a house in Dallas since Jan. 1, unable to leave. But then that's his own choice. He'll be there until Jan. 1, 2001, barring medical emergency. Dotcomguy is conducting a project to show how retailers can best use the Internet. Everything he uses for the next year he must purchase off the Internetfood, clothing, entertainment, books, whatever. Wait! There's more to DCG's little experiment. His house and backyard (where the rules allow him an occasional romp) are outfitted with 16 cameras so visitors to his web site (What else? www.dotcomguy.com) can watch him cook, clean and sleep 24 hours a day. Why someone would want to do that (e-voyeurism?) is not part of DCG's thesis, but suffice to say his tiny little physical world is on display. Of course he also is online quite often and has met fellow surfers from all over the world. He told National Public Radio's Bob Edwards he's already had marriage proposals.
