The "X" stations, situated south of the border in order to get around the Federal Radio Commission's regulations, were designed to send a signal all the way to Canada and beyond. For decades, beginning in the 1930s, stations such as XER, XERA, XERF, XEG and the rest attracted hordes of listeners, eager to hear musical performers and be swayed by pitchmen selling everything from Crazy Water Crystals to baby chicks, tomato plants to Last Supper tablecloths and autographed pictures of Jesus. Radio and dissemination of musical style. Radio shows such as the Grand Ole Opry on WSM Nashville, the National Barn Dance on WLS Chicago, and the Wheeling Jamboree on WWVA Wheeling, West Virginia, popularized hillbilly and country music during the '30s, '40s and beyond. But it was use of the X stations that was the major factor in spreading awareness of these musical styles.
Extractions: KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Janette Carter, the last surviving child of country musicâs founding Carter Family, who in recent years preserved her parentsâ oldtime style with weekly performances, has died. She was 82. Family members said Carter, who had battled Parkinsonâs disease and other illnesses, was taken to the Holston Valley Medical Center on Tuesday. Her family said she appeared to be improving for a time, but died on Sunday. Carter was the daughter of A.P. and Sara Carter. Her parents and her fatherâs sister-in-law Maybelle Carter formed a singing trio discovered in 1927 when talent scout Ralph Peer came through the Tennessee-Virginia border town of Bristol to record mountain music. When her brother Joe died last March, Janette Carter became the last surviving child of the original groupâs members. (The best known of her generation to present-day listeners was country star June Carter Cash, a daughter of Maybelle and wife of Johnny Cash. Carter Cash died in May 2003 at age 73. Her husband died later that year.) Following the death of her father in 1960, Janette Carter dedicated her life to preserving not only the Carter Family music, but the folk and country music of Appalachia.

The most influential group in country music history, the Carter Family switched the emphasis from hillbilly instrumentals to vocals, made scores of their songs part of the standard country music canon, and made a style of guitar playing, "Carter picking," the dominant technique for decades. Along with Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family were among the first country music stars. Comprised of a gaunt, shy gospel quartet member named Alvin P. Carter and two reserved country girls his wife, Sara, and their sister-in-law, Maybelle the Carter Family sang a pure, simple harmony that influenced not only the numerous other family groups of the '30s and the '40s, but folk, bluegrass, and rock musicians like Woody Guthrie, Bill Monroe

At the time, there was very little in their catalog to choose from, if you wanted to catch an overview of their work like I did. This album samples their late 1930s recordings for the Decca label.

Extractions: The Carter Family The Carter Family transformed country music from a cultural phenomenon popular with rural audiences to an art form beloved by mainstream America. The down-home melodies and beautiful harmonies of these Appalachian musicians had wide appeal, and while they didnt undertake huge national tours or make films like their contemporary Jimmie Rodgers, they did sell hundreds of thousands of records and made over 270 recordings between 1927 and 1941. Alvin Pleasant Delaney Doc Carter, born April 15, 1891 in Maces Spring, Virginia, was the oldest of Robert and Molly Carters eight children. Robert Carter had musical talent, but didnt play because of religious beliefs. His wife Molly taught their children to sing ballads that had been handed down through generations. A.P.s first job was on a railroad gang, and while he was away from home wrote songs about Clinch Mountain. He returned home in 1911 and became a fruit tree salesman, while continuing to write songs in his spare time. Sara Dougherty, born July 21, 1898 in Flat Woods, Virginia, learned to play the autoharp, guitar, and banjo as a young girl. She met A.P., while he was traveling around selling trees (the story goes that she was sitting on her front porch singing a tune and playing her autoharp), and they were married on June 18, 1915. With A.P. on fiddle and Sara on autoharp, the couple played music in peoples homes and in churches.

Seventeen acetates have fallen into Strachwitz's hands, and so were born three recently released Carter Family CDs titled On Border Radio . The sounds of On Border Radio are not what made the Carters million sellers. Rather, the family's voluminous popular recordings for Victor now being methodically reissued by Boston-based Rounder Records are the very fabric of country music history. But the radio transcriptions are an illuminating peek behind the scenes. The close harmonies of A.P. Carter, his wife, Sara, and her cousin Maybelle were discovered by a traveling talent scout in 1927, at the same audition where "Singing Brakeman" Jimmie Rodgers got his start. Cousin Maybelle has had the strongest effect on the evolution of country music, as her modified flat-picking including a bass-string rumble known to some as the "Carter lick" has influenced country pickers and piano players alike. Between 250 and 300 recordings, including such popular songs as "Keep on the Sunny Side" and an early recorded rendition of the standard "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," vaulted the trio to the status of country-music legends. Later generations of Carters, like Maybelle's daughter June (a singer who married Johnny Cash) and granddaughter Carlene, have kept the flame burning.
Extractions: Who is the father of Country Music? Whos the mother? Who started this whole big snowball rolling? At first, when contemplating this thought, I was tempted to say Captain John Smith. Thats right, the guy who helped found the colony of Virginia in 1607 and avoided having his head bashed in by the timely intervention of Pocahontas. Upon further reflection, Id have to say it was those groups of nobles, royalty and investors in the late 16th and early 17th centuries who sponsored the explorations and colonization of the east coast of the North American continent, particularly the region from the lower Chesapeake Bay down to about present day Wilmington, NC. The reasons these expeditions were funded and undertaken were many: profit, expansion of religious tenets, glory for the English Crown, search for possible trade routes to Asia and circumnavigation, and for many, just the thirst for adventure and to get away from crowded and corrupt ol Europe. The region collectively known as Appalachia then as now, was a difficult place to get around in. Settlements and fledgling communities were isolated and self-sufficient. The people had to grow their own food, build their own dwellings, hunt their own meat and provide their own entertainment when a hard days work was done. Still, this pioneer stock was made of stern stuff, and, fueled by their religious faith and a strong work ethic, over the years, the area was settled and somewhat tamed, as it is today.

JESSICA ROBERTSON Posted Jan 23, 2006 12:00 AM Janette Carter, the last surviving member of legendary country music institution the Carter Family, died yesterday of Parkinson's disease and other health complications at the age of eighty-two. Carter's parents, A.P. and Sara Carter, founded the Carter Family as a trio in 1926, along with A.P.'s sister-in-law Maybelle. (Maybelle's daughter, June, wife of Johnny Cash, became one of the better-known Family members.) The family became one of country music's first stars and recorded more than three hundred folk songs (songs in the public domain), which later became known as Carter songs. Janette Carter had upheld the traditional country repertoire of her family along with the country and folk music of Appalachia through weekly performances, even in recent years, and was an accomplished autoharp player. In September, Carter was honored by the National Endowment for the Arts with the Bess Lomax Hawes Award, which recognized her effort to preserve and perform Appalachian music. Extractions: The Carter Family made their first recordings on the Victor label in 1927, in Bristol, Tennessee. During the next 17 years they recorded some 300 old-time ballads, traditional tunes, country songs, and Gospel hymns, all representatives of America's southern folklore and heritage. They operated out of their homes in the Clinch Mountain area of Virginia until 1938. The next few years they toured Texas and the various southern neighbors until they disbanded in 1943. Maybelle Carter, who has been called the "Queen of Country Music," continued the tradition and her career with her three daughters, Anita, Helen, and June who is married to Johnny Cash. Enough of their recordings remained in the vaults to keep the group current through the '40s. Their influence was evident through further generations of musicians, in all forms of popular music, until the end of the century. Thus giving them a deserving title of THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME. by EJH
