    Extractions: During the young impressionable years of adolescence I remember attending one of my first handball games at the Noriega Hotel. My father often spoke of the achievements of such legendary players as Perkain in 1793 and other historic talents Gaskoina and Chiquito de Cambo. Little did I know that in the trinqueta-style court that we frequented on many occasions I was to be introduced to the personalities that made the game not only an exciting sport but also a virtual celebrity event in Bakersfield and throughout the Basque communities of the American West. On this Sunday afternoon after church, with a satisfied stomach from a superb lunch prepared in Mrs. Elizalde's Noriega kitchen, we gathered in the wooden stands behind the court. An older man (old enough to be any one's grandfather) sat in anticipation of the games. Sporting an interesting western hat he rolled his own cigarettes and carefully licked the paper with the steady coordination of hand and mouth. Judging by his tobacco-stained hands and leathery skin, he had been doing this for many years. After a friendly exchange with a fellow spectator, each pulled out some money, handed it to a third person, shook hands and made a wager on the outcome.

Only a small number of the many fine poets in the United States have been awarded the Bollingen Prize." Bidart was born in Bakersfield, Calif., in 1939 and educated at the University of California, Riverside, and at Harvard. He joined the faculty at Wellesley College in 1972. His volumes of poetry include In the Western Night: Collected Poems, 1965-90 Desire Star Dust (2005), all from Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and Music Like Dirt (2002) from Sarabande Books. Brinnin and Frances Malcolm Brinnin. When he was young his family moved to Detroit, Michigan. Brinnin graduated from the University of Michigan in 1942 and within a year entered graduate school at Harvard University. Brinnin, who was also a critic, anthologist, and teacher, taught at Vassar, Boston University, the University of Connecticut, and Harvard. He was Director of the Young Men's and Young Women's Hebrew Association Poetry Center (the 92nd Street Y) in New York City during one of the Center's most successful periods (1949-1956). In "The Second Hour of the Night," the longest of the poems in Desire , Bidart retells Ovid's tale of Myrrha and her disastrous love for her father, Cinyras. Myrrha's love and her fate become for Bidart a meditation on the power of desire. But some readers see Myrrha's incestuous love as more particularly emblematic of gay desire (e.g., Greenwell, In Posse Review 11): one forbidden love stands in for another. Although the object of Myrrha's desire is not a member of the same sex, he is a member of the same family; Myrrha's love is made problematic because of a similarity between subject and object. With familial homogeneity substituted for sexual homogeneity, Myrrha becomes an avatar of a same-sex lover. Although Bidart's text certainly allows for such queering, a reading of Myrrha's predicament solely as an exploration of gay desire would be incomplete. For Bidart challenges an audience to see the underlying similarity of all desiregay, straight, and otherwise. Bidart's desire is a force that lays all low: whether one's desire focuses on an object allowed or disallowed by society is largely a matter of luck. In Bidart's terms, everyone is Myrrha or potentially Myrrha. If we believe Bidart, we all could be queer. Queer Myrrha is not that queer at all.
