He was a major figure in American poetry in the second half of the 20th century and often considered one of the founders of the Confessional school of poetry.    Extractions: January 9, 2007 John Berryman’s The Dreamworks has been sitting on my shelf since the early 70’s, and, though I’ve tried to start it a few times, I think Theresa William’s recent announcement that she was going to use it in a new course she is teaching inspired me to finally start reading the book. There’s little doubt that the poems are hard to understand, reminding me in several ways of Roethke’s “The Lost Son,” particularly in its personal obscurity. One is required to read multiple poems in order to truly understand any single poem, much in the same way that we must learn about another person’s personal life before we can truly understand some of their actions. (Of course, it also helps if you spend a little time on the internet (or in the library) reading about the author’s life. Several critics note that Berryman is linked not only to the “Confessional Poets,” but also to the Beats, and though the subject matter certainly seems confessional in the same sense that much of Roehtke’s poetry was, his style, particularly its use of informal language does remind me of the best Beat poets. One of my favorites is the number 1, perhaps because I could hear Berryman read it

At an early age Berryman's childhood was scarred by his father's suicide in Florida after a quarrel with his mother, and his own turbulent life - much of it spent battling alcoholism - ended when he threw himself from a bridge in Minneapolis in 1972. His poetry is colloquial, erudite, witty, lyrical and intensely confessional - the poet's own neuroses and insecurities are scarcely far from the view. Robert Lowell once described Berryman's verse as "more tearful and funny than we can easily bear." In his best-known work the Dream Songs sequence, Berryman speaks, using an array of first, second and third person voices, through the persona of Henry, a modern-day bar-room Hamlet struggling to cope with his own sorry existence. By 1972 it was a struggle Berryman himself was no longer able to continue.

How he arrived at that messy end is probably the state's most twisted and famed literary story prior to that of Michael Dorris. When Berryman was 8, living with his family in Florida, his father walked outside at dawn with a shotgun and killed himself just beyond his son's bedroom window. Only months later, Berryman's mother married the landlord, her paramour while John's father was alive. The new family quickly moved to New York City, where Berryman would eventually receive a fine education and begin writing poetry.

He “takes liberties with syntax and style”. The Dream Songs involves a syntax which Berryman partially adopted from Shakespeare who was a big influence in his work. Some other major influences in his life were Robert Lowell, Mark Van Doren, and Yeats. In The Dream Songs , Berryman speaks about his own life through a man named Henry. Henry is a middle-aged American who must deal with paternal suicide, drunkenness, and other problems that Berryman himself experienced. He speaks to an unnamed friend about his issues, and his friend sometimes offers advice. There are almost 400 Dream Songs which were originally published in 77 Dream Songs and His Toy, His Dream, His Rest . When they became a big hit, they were published together in The Dream Songs Berryman often wrote about how he felt about his father’s death in his poetry. Berryman was also dependent on alcohol for thirty years and was treated several times, drifting in and out of rehabilitation and psychoanalysis. His addiction was another issue that had a large impact in his poetry. Berryman’s distinctive way of telling about his life through poetry was loved by many. He won eleven awards: Oldham Shakespeare Prize, Poetry Society of America’s Shelley Memorial award (1948), American Academy award for poetry (1950), National Institute of Arts and Letters Award (1950), the Levinson Prize (1950), the Guggenheim Fellowship (1952, 1966), Academy of American Poets, The Pulitzer Prize(1964), National Endowment for the Arts award (1967), National Book Award (1969), and the Bollingen Award (1969).
