All four of us were able to visit the Verbo orphanage in Managua with it's director, Valentina. The children there were shy at first, but eventually warmed up enough to teach us how to pick mangos and play soccer with us. Gringos against the kids, although many of them were excited to be gringos for the game. We were taken on a ride in a little wagon on the back of a small horse, and at the end of the day watched a movie in Spanish with all the kids. I thought I had the movie figured out until the end when it all ended weird and I realized I didn't have much of an idea what was really going on...

There were several e-mails, and I discovered that the site had been a quite a bit more active than I had thought in my absence. The load included this, the first hate-mail for this site. Your site sucks take it off, then go eat shit and die. The grammar was more or less proper. It was short, and to the point. Overall, a good job, and there isn't much here to make fun of. I could go into something about the clauses in the first part, but really, how much can you make fun of a clause? I wasn't sure that I could respond to such an airtight e-mail. Except that when the jackass send this, I hadn't touched the site for a good 2 1/2 months, usually a good sign that it's probably not going to be touched again. However, this is not quite as bad as... Whether your funny or not, maddox did it first. you came along too late, its a good idea, really, being negative and all, But maddox has already done it. Stop copying him... Its retarted. This one is really beautiful. He used "Your" instead of "you're." He doesn't know how to spell "retarded." Really, the kind of thing that Maddox would have a field day with. As he's so quick to point out, however, I'm not Maddox. I was quite surprised to hear this, and took several months of therapy before I was ready to face the world again.

We are greeted by a nice surprise, Aaron's brother, Mark and his wife Melanie and their 2 kids, Adrianne and Andrew are here. It's great to see them and enjoy telling stories over a delicious lunch. Later that day, we stopped by friends, Ted and Karen, who live in Olathe and see the rest of the Ralston family and chow down on some delicious BBQ. July 7, 2007 Pomona Days My sister, Kathy and her husband, Larry live in Pomona and invited us down to experience the fun of Pomona Days, a daylong celebration consisting of playing BINGO, browsing the park grounds and a parade. It seems the whole town turned out, and Larry who is president of the Lions Club was busy the entire day. We missed the Jaws of Life extraction that the fire department put on earlier. Kristi and Bud, came down to join in the fun also. The parade began at 5pm, and Kathy had her granddaughter Madisyn, ride her electric car in the parade with signs on each side advertising Kathy's DayCare. Kathy recruited Kristi and I to hand out business cards as we walked along with Madisyn. The parade route went down the main highway and the police blocked off the street as the parade of tractors, lawnmowers, horses and 4 wheelers made their way. We enjoyed a delicious cookout at Kathy's afterwards, and Aaron was recruited as chef. He is good at that, you know.

For years now, the public has poked fun at his poor use of grammar, breathing pauses every third word, beady eyes, and just plain goofy expressions that the media has a talent for capturing. But in times of war, we need to put jokes aside and get serious. Grave issues are at hand, and this is no time for making fun of the nation's leaders. ;-) The humor masks the horror. Bush's new image as a magician, he figures, will be especially useful when it comes to dealing with those wacky environmentalists and their nagging causes. For instance, in recent months we have seen devastating wildfires throughout the West, and calls for solutions burn like flames licking a Bushy chin. In a bold and illusory move, Bush proposed a new " healthy forest initiative " last month to put out the flames. That is, he can't see the forest for the trees, because cutting all the trees down removes the threat of wildfire, as well as the forest itself. The magician in him trusts that the public will not notice the lack of forests, and all the diverse species that inhabit them. He is likely to pull off this magic trick, because in his left hand he holds all the distractions a captive audience could desire - terrorism/war, "regime change," high unemployment, corporate scandals, and a lagging world economy. In short, fear.

Worldwide, an estimated 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water, and 2.4 billion people don't have adequate sanitation services according to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization. At home, the problem lays more with state and federal budgets, and spending priorities emphasizing military spending while cutting social services, including water. The nation's largest aquifer, the Ogallala, is being mined so fast by Midwestern farmers that a significant amount of the groundwater supply may actually dry up by 2010. The Ogallala contains 3.3 billion acre-feet of water, which would take an estimated 6,000 years to refill if it were drained completely. Corporations claim that they can sustainably manage precious natural resourceslike freshwaterbetter than public utilities currently do. Yet water companies face the same trouble as oil companiesquick unsustainable profits, fraud, accounting scandals, and collapseleaving employees, consumers, and taxpayers to clean up the mess. One-time oil giant Enron may soon meet its water match in France's Vivendi.
