Extractions: Chinese Region 3 DVD It's no surprise that Alexandre Aja's next film is to be a remake of Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes. Even before I read interview after interview with Aja naming Craven as an influence, High Tension made me think contantly of Last House on the Left because of the brutal nature of this film. With a scene that is reminiscent of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I was left with the impression that if Aja had his way, he would have been the house director for New Line back in the early 70s when low budget splatter films were their bread and butter. I opted to see this film on DVD in order to see it unedited and in French. From what I understand in Aja's interviews, the film was partially dubbed as well as slightly cut in order to get the film as wide a release as possible. As it turned out, the audience that showed up for remakes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Amityville Horror stayed away. Unlike a film like The Blair Witch Project that creates a sense of constant dread, but doesn't show anything, High Tension lives up to its title by creating both the constant unease of the viewer and assaulting the viewer with intense gore. The film begins with two female college students, Marie and Alex, driving to the remote farm house which is the home of Alex's parents and little brother. While on the road, Marie describes her nightmare of being chased in a forest. In the meantime, we see a stocky man in a battered van, somewhere in a field, being orally serviced by a woman. Moments later, in a long shot, we see the arm stick out of the truck, dropping the woman's head on a rural road.

In the dead of night,a stranger knocks on the door. With the 1st swing of his knife, the girls' idyllic weekend turns into an endless night of horror In the 1970s, moviegoers reveled in a new sub-genre of horror films that were low on plot, required only the most basic acting skills, and called upon dumb teenagers to die onscreen deaths in a multitude of strange and horrific ways. The slasher movie was born, and with it came classic features such as THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, HALLOWEEN, and FRIDAY THE 13TH. The genre enjoyed a postmodern revival in the late-20th and early-21st centuries with films such as SCREAM and SCARY MOVIE, but French director Alexandre Aja (FURIA) hauls the slasher film back to its roots with his gore-addled romp HIGH TENSION.

Extractions: Dubbed into English When I first saw High Tension at the 2003 Toronto Film Festival, I wrote the following: " [ High Tension ] has virtually no chance of finding a North American distributor. After all, what's the market for slasher films with subtitles?" Imagine my surprise to hear that Lions Gate Films had picked up the North American rights and were determined to release the film unedited (which garnered an NC-17 rating) and subtitled. Fast-forward 18 moths. Apparently, more financial concerns have cause Lions Gate to take a step back. The version of High Tension that is finally getting a United States release has been slightly trimmed (to get an R rating) and dubbed into English. The dubbing isn't as big an issue as it might be in another movie. There's not a lot of dialogue in

Hoping to prepare for their college exams in peace and quiet, they travel Alexias parents secluded farmhouse to spend a weekend in the country. In the dead of night there comes a knock on the door. It is a stranger, and with the first swing of his knife, the girls academic weekend is transformed into an endless night of horror. The two girls must know battle for survival at the hands of a sadistic psychopath. REVIEW : Over the past six-months weve had to endure what Hollywood is trying to pass off as the new wave of horror films. And while there have been a few noteworthy efforts, such as Cabin Fever, there have been far more stinkers, like The Ring Two or Hide and Seek. Most of the interesting and entertaining contemporary genre films have been coming from Asia, but a few years ago Spain and Italy were serving up some shocking treats. Now, a young French director by the name of Alexandre Aja has assemble a film where the title aptly fits the overall tone of the film HIGH TENSION. From the editing and sound, to the effects and the acting, Alexandre clear shows he is not only a devotee of the horror genre but has earned a place among such cinematic horror masters Tobe Hooper, John Carpenter, Wes Craven, and Dario Argento. The key to HIGH TENSION is that Aja has a key understanding about the number and a scale of his locations, the limited number of secondary characters, and the casting of a actress who can meet the demands of the main character, Marie. Although there is only a minute cut from the American release of the film, Aja builds his special effect shoots so that the audience sees just enough and than lets their imagination take over. And just when the audience might be a bit desensitized by the level of violence in the film Aja delivers several relentless moments that take the depth of his killers cruelty to new lows.
