Reviews Reviews and Press Coverage Dermot Bolger: 'dry wit . . . a good companion' Irish novelist Dermot Bolger is writer in residence for the South Dublin Libraries, and he gives his view of the book in the diary he writes for them. An excerpt: the book works because of Moore's sheer absence of cleverness. He possesses no religious belief and recognises that the interest in Columbanus for his college days and this long trip across Europe are primarily an excuse to postpone the future. He is doing this because it alleviates the need to be doing something else. It is a way to put his life on hold. The nice thing about the book is that nothing much happens. He descends a few hairpin bends at dangerous speeds, lusts after but never manages to bed the odd passing waitress, and spends a lot of time cycling in the rain and sorting his head out. He has a dry wit and is very aware both of the importance of the pilgrimage for himself and how it is slightly ridiculous. Extractions: Alumni on the Go by Debbie Widger, '81, '93 Alumni Relations Director NMSU Alumni Association MSC 3AS, P.O. Box 30001 Las Cruces, NM 88003 dwidger@nmsu.edu The past few months have been busy ones for the Alumni Association, with chapter events, football games, picnics and homecoming preparations. All of these activities are always fun, but truly make the time pass very quickly. California Bay Area Alumni Reception - Aug. 27, 1998 President and Mrs. Conroy, Vice President for University Advancement Marcia Muller and myself were in Santa Clara for one of the best alumni receptions in that area in some time. Jack Burleson, '44, along with Bill Wunsch, '46, planned the fun evening. We had alumni ranging from the 1940s to 1995. Graduates had a great time telling their tales of the campus during their time. Everyone is ready to get the Bay Area Alumni Chapter back to 100 attendees. Active members are thinking about fun activities that will draw Aggies. I am looking forward to what they come up with. Door prizes are always a hit, but this year I had a few of the "Friends Don't Let Friends Go To UNM" shirts left. Those I had left in the office were ordered that night. I wish I had more, but unfortunately the story from the printer is UNM won't let us print these anymore. Well, they were fun while they lasted.

Extractions: Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO >> Last week in St. Louis, rookie Jerome Williams begged his teammates to share any secrets on how to shut down Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols. San Francisco pitching coach Dave Righetti made it simple: "Challenge him." Williams pitched his second complete game of the year in his eighth major league start, stumping Pujols and the rest of the St. Louis lineup and leading the Giants to a 5-1 victory last night. The right-hander (4-1) won his fourth straight, allowing seven hits, striking out four, walking one and throwing 127 pitches. Williams' last two victories have come against the Cardinals and he has held Pujols hitless in seven at-bats in those two games. "When I came into St. Louis, he had a .380-something average," Williams said. "I said, 'I'm going to face this guy,' and I was asking everybody in the clubhouse, 'What should I do?' "
