Awaiting them in Alaska are both hunters and scientists. As Doug Schneider reports in this week's Arctic Science Journeys Radio, bowhead numbers are at their highest level in nearly a decade. STORY: The annual hunt for bowhead whales is finally over in the Inupiat Eskimo village of Barrow, on Alaska's north coast. Native hunters harvested 20 bowheads that were each processed and divided among village residents. North Slope Borough whale biologist Craig George says this year's hunt was a good one, despite the broken ice that choked open leads and fog that made for poor visibility. GEORGE: "It was a pretty typical year. In fact we had a lot of heavy multiyear ice which was driven in by strong southwest wind events. We had a pretty good season. I think 20 whales were landed. There are more whales that are struck and lost so the total mortality to the herd is higher." While hunters were busy looking for whales to harvest, scientists stayed busy conducting the first comprehensive census of the bowhead population since 1993.

Perkins published an article entitled: Fossi l Cetacea of the Pleistocene of the United States and Canada (with special reference to Delphinapterus vermontanus , Thompson) . In it, Perkins provided detailed measurements of the bones and teeth, and speculated on the major questions of the w hales age, lineage and evolutionary history. The following are direct quotes from Perkin's work: "...the most important question...is whether the Vermont specimen possesses sufficient differences from Delphinapterus leucas to confirm Thompson's name vermontana . That the generic status of the specimen is correctly determined, that is, that it is a true Delphinapterus , there is, I think, no doubt, but whether it is identical with the living species leucas or should be placed as a new species, as Thompson thought, is not so readily decided." "Anyone who has studied the skeletons of living cetacea (whales) to any extent has soon become convinced of the difficulty, which in many cases amounts to impossibility, of satisfactorily determining the specific identity of two skeletons, or pa rts of them, unless there is opportunity to make direct comparison of the bones. Even then it is not always easy to arrive at certainty. The difficulties arise from the considerable individual variation in the same species and in a greater or less gener al similarity which is found in skeletons of different species or even genera."

This ancient relative of the whale evolved from land mammals. Killer Whales have huge appetites. One male whale had 13 porpoises and 14 seals in its stomach. Killer Whales don't only eat whales, they also eat squid, sea elephants, seals, dolphins, narwhals, polar bears and will occasionally attack schools of salmon and tuna. Some Killer Whales need to eat three seal pups a day in order to survive. Killer Whales can tell the difference between an adult seal and a pup seal by the splashes they make. Killer Whales are very clever hunters. They travel in schools and attack even the blue whale. They always attack in groups. Some people call the Killer Whale "wolves of the sea" because they hunt in packs like wolves. They will circle their prey and bite its stomach or make its prey open its mouth and seize its tongue. A Killer Whale will bump or tip ice floats to dislodge seals which they can easily catch in the water. Killer Whales are one of the few whales that can come up on land. They do this because they try to force seals into the water so they can kill them and eat them. They also do this to the polar bear but they have to break through the ice and sometimes they actually have to come up on the ice which is very dangerous for them.

In this context, Orwell discusses the writings of Henry Miller, in particular his work called "Tropic of Cancer." Orwell finds Miller to be the ideal writer for the new totalitarian age that is to come, a writer who disengages from reality - like Jonah inside the belly of the whale - happy to accept the tragedies and atrocities of the era, including Stalin, Hitler, bombs, trenches and concentration camps. He was a man of diverse talents, and throughout the years he worked selflessly for the organization, offering us all his skills and expertise, and above all complete dedication to the conservation of marine mammals. One of George's roles in Orrca was directing the Rapid Response Team, which is responsible for rescuing marine mammals entangled in nets and ropes. This is a team of Orrca and NPWS officers who, since 1994, have shared their knowledge and expertise in the classroom and at regular practice days on the Hawkesbury River, disentangling our famous black whale called 'Millie' - a whale that George himself had helped design and build. Shortly after the team was formed, we had our first challenge: to rescue a seal entangled with ropes and buoys off Sydney Heads. The next challenge was in 1998 with a humpback trailing a huge load of shark netting off Collaroy. The team worked in difficult sea conditions and it was late in the afternoon before the whale was finally freed of its burden and headed south.
