In spite of Rohmer's popularity, his family lived for long periods in poverty because of the bad deals he made with publishers. "Imagine a person, tall, lean and feline, high shouldered, with a brow like Shakespeare and a face like Satan, a close-shaven skull, and long, magnetic eyes of the true cat-green. Invest him with all the cruel cunning of an entire Eastern race, accumulated in one giant intellect, with all the resources of science past and present, with all the resources, if you will, of a wealthy government - which, however, already has denied all knowledge of his existence. Imagine that awful being, and you have a mental picture of Dr Fu Manchu, the yellow peril incarnate in one man..." (from The Mystery of Dr Fu Manchu Sax Rohmer was born Arthur Henry Ward in Birmingham of Irish parents. His father, William Ward, was employed as an office clerk and eventually held the position of office manager. Rohmer's mother, Margaret Mary (Furey) Ward, was neurasthenic and increasingly dependent on alcohol. Young Sax Rohmer received no formal schooling until he was nine or ten years old, but his father probably taught his son to read. Rohmer adopted the name Sarsfield at the age of 18, impressed by his mother's alcoholic claims of being descended from a famous 17th-century Irish general Patrick Sarsfield. He later explained that the pen name came from 'sax' which was Saxon for 'blade' and 'rohmer' which meant 'roamer'.

Extractions: Created by Sax Rohmer (pseudonym of Arthur Sarsfield Ward, 1883-1959) Attempt to cash in on P.I. craze, with P.I. STORM KENNEDY investigating murder. The usual Rohmer touches allegedly abound, including wild coincidences, various macabre and supernatural ramblings, unfortunate stereotypes and pure silliness. According to the dedication, Sax's wife Rose Elizabeth Rohmer helped write this. Sax Rohmer, of course, was best known for creating the evil Dr. Fu Manchu , first introduced in a short story in 1912, who went on to become one of the all-time great supervillians, and the personification of the Yellow Peril. His career lasted for decades and included appearances in short stories, novels, radio and film. Yet, despite his success, rohmer, thanks to some spectacularly bad investments and even worse management of his finances, lived in poverty most of his life. Extractions: Sand Roughs No. 6 - Summer Solstice The Fantasy Book: An Illustrated History from Dracula to Tolkein Franz Rottensteiner Collier Books, 1978 The Fantasy Book is a very nice history of fantasy. It is gorgeously illustrated and entertainingly written. The author is a German citizen and he throws in some great information about European weird fiction writers that are probably unfamiliar to an American audience. Supernatural Horror in Literature Rottensteiner quibbles with this a bit but goes on to give a nice talk about the attraction of horror fiction to audiences of the past and why horror fiction remains popular today. The first chapter details the Gothic origins of the genre. The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole (1717-1797) is considered the first weird novel. The Gothic novel was very popular and eventually became the subject of parody. Northanger Abbey (1818) is one famous parody. Next up was the oriental fantasy. William Beckford (1760-1844), a very wealthy but jaded fellow wrote the popular novel, Vathek It is about a very wealthy but jaded fellow who indulges his wickedness in adventure after adventure finally resulting in his heart being eternally circled by living fire.
