Extractions: Comparing Census Data among Years The major difficulty with comparing Census data among different years is that Census terminology and the geographic units for which data were collected, as well as the boundaries of the geographic units, vary from census to census. Definitions of subjects such as race and ethnicity have changed over the years to reflect the interests and the needs of the U.S. Government for specific tabulations. Some examples of geographic changes are listed below. All SMSAs (Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area) were tracted. There were an additional 2000 tracts created on contract with local governments. A total of about 34,600 tracts. Census tract definition has not changed but approximately 9000 new census tracts were created. All counties in SMSAs are tracted as are an additional 252 counties outside SMSAs. About 8 percent of 1970 tracts were divided because of population increase. About 1 percent of 1970 tracts were combined or had boundary changes. About 43,300 tracts in 1980. HA 201 1980 .U58 1982
