Prior to this point, these data had not been publicly released except as a national total, as state totals, for cities and counties over 100,000 population, and for congressional districts. The full data file being released includes information for areas as small as census blocks. In response to the anticipated demand for these data in the public discussion of Census 2000, the Census Bureau determined the release of these data on the Internet is the best and most efficient way to make these data publicly available. Copies of the questionnaires appear in 200 Years of U.S. Census Taking [Entry 1] , most 1990 Census publications, and the 1990 Census Users' Guide [Entry 2]. United States Department of Commerce. Bureau of the Census. ABSTRACT: The Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) 5-Percent Sample contains household and person records for a sample of housing units that received the ''long form'' of the 1990 Census questionnaire. Data items cover the full range of population and housing information collected in the 1990 Census, including 500 occupation categories, age by single years up to 90, and wages in dollars up to $140,000. Each person identified in the sample has an associated household record, containing information on household characteristics such as type of household and family income. UM COLLECTION NOTES: These PUMS files were acquired from ICPSR in May 2001. The variable descriptions in the codebook were created with reference to the data definition file used for CA 1% PUMS by Computer-Assisted Survey Methods Program ( CSM ) at the University of California, Berkeley. PAA Paper on the Ulysses System This project is an effort to link a range of georeferenced demographic and other socioeconomic data products with remote sensing data related to land cover and use. Population dynamics and distribution have been consistently identified as key elements in understanding human interactions with the environment and in considering possible responses to environmental change. The National Research Council (NRC) has identified population dynamics as one of five priority areas of research for the US Global Change Research Program. It also pointed out the key role of georeferenced social data in two other priority areas, improving the understanding of land use change and assessing impacts, vulnerability, and adaptation to global change (NRC, 1994.) The 1992 report of the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change Programme (HDP) on Population Data and Global Environmental Change emphasized the importance of georeferenced population data for global change research and applications and recommended development of data bases at several different levels of aggregation and resolution. In order to respond to the above needs, SEDAC is providing several population data products and services: an archive of Census-related products, a collection of Chinese data resources, a global population database, a Gridded Population of the World, a Georeferenced Population Data Sets of Mexico, and an integrated population and land cover data for the state of Michigan. The following interactive tools provide access to U.S. Census data: Public Microdata Samples (PUMS) for 1980 and 1990 through the Ulysses tabulation system; DDViewer is an on-line interactive mapping tool of 1990 US Census data while DDCarto allows for interactive ordering of those data in prominent GIS formats; Geocorr creates correspondence between Census and other geographies for the US.
