Archives Hub: Guided Tour: About The Unity Theatre Robert Tressell s novel on the working conditions of painters and decorators inHastings online manuscript of the novel by Robert Tressell (18701911), http://www.archiveshub.ac.uk/tour/reunity.shtml
Extractions: Phone +44 (0)161 275 6789 Skip Intro GB 0394 UNITY Glossary More about Unity Theatre More about this tour The 1930s was an era when politics and culture met and Socialism became fashionable. Novels such as Love on the dole and plays performed by the communist Unity Theatre explored the realities of working-class life. There was new interest in documentary writing. George Orwell's study of Wigan and J.B. Priestley's record of his journey around England were admired for their genuine insight into the life of the people. Robert Tressell's novel on the working conditions of painters and decorators in Hastings was first published in 1914. Since then it has become a left-wing classic. The ragged trousered philanthropists tells the story of Frank Owen, a skilled craftsman, who tries to convert his fellow workers to socialism. Throughout the book Owen attacks the greed and dishonesty of the capitalist system. The ragged trousered philanthropists was also adapted for the stage and performed by Unity Theatre. Love on the dole , set in 1930s Salford, includes a dramatisation of the Battle of Bexley Square. One of the demonstrators is based on Eddie Frow, co-founder of the Working Class Movement Library: "A finely featured young man with long hair took his place on the rostrum instantly winning the acclamation of the crowd by heaping invective upon all with whom he disassociated himself on the social scale".

Extractions: edit this box The following is a list of self identified socialists . Individuals qualify for this list if known by reason of their identification as socialists in whole or major part. Therefore individuals who might be socialists but who are not known as a result of that are not listed unless their socialism is of importance to their work or their espousal of socialism has become a source of interest in the individual. The list is by date of birth and can be searched by name. Other lists of ideological currents within socialism or by party affiliation can be found below. Some of the listed individuals have been or were committed to other ideologies either before or after their identification with a socialist ideology. Where such individuals have rejected all forms of socialism and socialist ideology in favour of a competing political ideology they will not be found on this list unless they are only known by reason of their time spent in the socialist movement. Given that the boundaries between different ideological currents within socialist movements and definitions of socialism are fiercely contested few will agree as to the inclusion of all the individuals on this list. Some individuals often regarded as socialists by ideological opponents of socialism have been excluded from the list where there is no substantive reason for considering the individual to have been or to be a socialist other than on the basis of such opponents.
