Before or during his lifetime, no tennis player exceeded the importance of William T. ("Big Bill") Tilden. He not only brought to the game a new level of performance but was more responsible than any other person for the emergence of tennis as an important spectator sport. In the celebrity-oriented 1920s, he joined such athletes as Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey as national sports idols. Tilden was remarkably slow to develop into a championship player. Born into a patrician Philadelphia family, Tilden dabbled in the game as a youngster at the exclusive Germantown Cricket Club. He did not win an individual national title until 1920, when he was twenty-seven years of age. But from 1920 through 1925 he never lost a match of any consequence. He won the U.S. championship six times and the 1920 and 1921 All-England (Wimbledon) titles. He also led the U.S. team in capturing and retaining the Davis Cup. Between 1925 and 1930, Tilden continued to dominate American tennis, winning his seventh American title in 1929 and Wimbledon again in 1930 at the age of thirty-seven, though by then he no longer retained his world supremacy. Tilden was a celebrity off the tennis court as well. Tall, angular, egotistical, and fancying himself as something of an intellectual, he wrote nondescript plays, short stories, and novels. His articles and books on tennis, however, were authoritative and remain classics in tennis literature to this day. He hobnobbed regularly with Hollywood stars and starlets and frequently quarreled with the officials of the United States Lawn Tennis Association. Sadly, Tilden finished his days suffering from financial insecurity and was arrested and briefly jailed twice for misdemeanors arising from his homosexuality.
