Extractions: Stephen Mitchelmore finds Thomas Bernhard to be elusive within two studies of the Austrian writer W Early on in Thomas Bernhard: the making of an Austrian , the first English biography of the Austrian novelist, playwright and poet, Gitta Honegger says the apparatus of the theatre is an "annoyingly overused existential paradigm", and she's right. I've only used it once and it's annoying me already. However, it is clear that her subject is the paradigm's essential figure. There seems to be no private Thomas Bernhard. As such, Honegger says he is a particularly Austrian phenomenon. The nation, she says, transplanted the baroque theatrics of the old Hapsburg Empire into its cultural life, notably the Salzburg Festival, the state run Burgtheatre, and one man: Thomas Bernhard. Each provided an arena for Austria to conjure its self image. However, the important thing to remember is that it wasn't Bernhard who said Austria was still full of Nazis, it was a character in his play "Heldenplatz". And while everyone assumes Bernhard meant every word as his own, those words are part of a whole that, as JJ Long explains in his book

Extractions: "Leahy is truly giving us our deepest philosophical and theological challenge, one which very few have thus far been able to meet in any way, and if this is the challenge of pure thinking, it is also the challenge of pure writing, and even if this is the most difficult writing in our history, it is a writing which truly creates its reader, and creates its reader as a truly new reader and thinker. All our postmodernities crumble into insignificance in confrontation with this challenge, but so do our existing philosophies and theologies, as when in Leahy's work we are truly and absolutely confronted with an Either/Or." Thomas J. J. Altizer, International Studies in Philosophy XXXV.4 " Foundation: Matter the Body Itself is Leahy's monumental effort to turn Western metaphysics inside out and establish it on a new foundation, working from, in his terms, an ' absolut e new beginning.' This will no doubt strike readers at first glance as an effort to resuscitate the dead corpse of foundationalism, that failed project of Descartesand behind him of Plotinus and Platoto ground being and our knowledge of being on a foundation independent of the fluctuations of exposed and changeable matter. But this does not capture the purpose of Leahy's project at all. Quite the contrary, his search for an absolute beginning is not remotely Cartesian or Plotinian. "
Extractions: Hobbes, Thomas (1588-1679), English philosopher and political theorist ( see Political Theory), one of the first modern Western thinkers to provide a secular justification for the political state. The philosophy of Hobbes marked a departure in English philosophy from the religious emphasis of Scholasticism. His ideas represented a reaction against the decentralizing ideas of the Reformation (1517-1648), which, Hobbes contended, brought anarchy ( see Anarchism). Regarded as an important early influence on the philosophical doctrine of utilitarianism, Hobbes also contributed to modern psychology and laid the foundations of modern sociology by applying mechanistic principles ( see Mechanism) in an attempt to explain human motivation and social organization.

CERTIORARI TO THE COURT OF APPEALS OF MICHIGAN No. 031230.Argued April 26, 2005Decided June 20, 2005 Petitioners, a trucking company engaged in both interstate and intrastate hauling and a trucking association, asked Michigan courts to invalidate the States flat $100 annual fee imposed on trucks engaged in intrastate commercial hauling, see Mich. Comp. Laws Ann. §478.2(1), claiming that it discriminates against interstate carriers and imposes an unconstitutional burden on interstate trade because trucks carrying both interstate and intrastate loads engage in less intrastate business than trucks carrying only intrastate loads. The State Court of Claims rejected the claim, holding that, because the fee is regulatory and intended for the Michigan Motor Carrier Acts administration, it is not amenable to apportionment; that it is an appropriate exercise of the States police power; and that it does not implicate the Commerce Clause because it falls only on intrastate commerce. The State Court of Appeals affirmed, and the State Supreme Court declined review. 255 Mich. App. 589, 662 N. W. 2d 784, affirmed.
Thomas Robert Malthus Biography, bibliography, resources and links. http://cepa.newschool.edu/~het/profiles/malthus.htm
Extractions: Robert Malthus (he went by his middle name) was born in "the Rookery", a country estate in Dorking, Surrey (south of London). He was the second son of Daniel Malthus, a country gentleman and avid disciple of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and David Hume (both of whom he knew personally). Accordingly, Malthus was educated according to Rousseauvian precepts by his father and a series of tutors. Malthus entered Jesus College, Cambridge, in 1784 and was ordained a minister of the Church of England in 1788. He earned his M.A. in 1791. Around 1796, Malthus became a curate in the sleepy town of Albury, a few miles from his father's house. Having been elected Fellow of Jesus College in 1793, he divided his time between Cambridge and Albury. It was in the course of his interminable intellectual debates with his father over the "perfectibility of society" thesis then being advanced by William Godwin and the Marquis de Condorcet , that Malthus's decided to set his ideas down on paper. It was eventually published as a pamphlet known as the Essay on Population In this famous work, Malthus posited his hypothesis that (unchecked) population growth always exceeds the growth of means of subsistence. Actual (checked) population growth is kept in line with food supply growth by "positive checks" (starvation, disease and the like, elevating the death rate) and "preventive checks" (i.e. postponement of marriage, etc. that keep down the birthrate), both of which are characterized by "misery and vice". Malthus's hypothesis implied that actual population always has a

Extractions: This review by Ian Stubbs originally appeared in the June issue of the U.K. SOF Internet Newsletter "Portholes". It was reprinted in the New Zealand SOFN Newsletter #24 The Genesis of God, A Theological Genealogy by Thomas J.J. Altizer (1993) . John Knox Press: Louisville, Kentucky. I'm sitting in Pizza Express in Islington. There's a buzz of conversation around the young clientele. I'm reading Genesis of God. I have two problems, what does this book mean and what can it possibly mean for these people here? Genesis of God is not an easy book. It is heavily philosophical and theological. It assumes some prior knowledge of a range of literary and philosophical works (some of which I have in my collection, though still with the bookmark after the first couple of pages!) It is written in an erudite and at times (for me) inaccessible style. But I think it's worth the effort. A bit like eating a pizza, you need a sharp knife and to work around it a bit, find and enjoy the softer, juicier bits and come back to the hard crust. Altizer is one of the founding fathers of the 'Death of God' school. He is a radical theologian whose theology is founded on the loss of the transcendent God which he sees as the hallmark of the modern age. His project is the theological implications of this loss which is the great realisation of the contemporary world exposed by literary heroes such as Milton, Blake and Joyce.
