BILLY WRIGHT CBE 1924-1994 Billy Wright was born at Ironbridge, Shropshire on 6th February 1924, but as a young frail-looking lad he was turned away from Molineux by the manager, who told him he was too small to become a professional footballer. He did however become one and went on to be the first player to win over 100 caps for his country. He was voted Footballer of the year (1952) and won 3 Championship medals with Wolves. In June 1959, he was awarded the CBE - for services to football and it came appropriately a month or so before he retired from the game.
