Il en est l’un des plus grands auteurs, avec des œuvres comme L’Île au trésor Le Maître de Ballantrae ou Enlevé , l’une des figures les plus influentes, puisqu’il initie le renouveau du genre, et l’un des plus grands théoriciens, puisqu’il définit inlassablement, au fil d’essais lumineux, les conditions d’un grand roman d'aventures. Robert Louis Stevenson est né à Edimbourg en 1850. S’il va vivre à Londres par la suite, il conserve toute son existence une nostalgie pour l’Ecosse qui se traduira par une figuration nostalgique de ses paysages dans plusieurs romans, comme Enlevé Le Maître de Ballantrae ou Catriona , œuvres liées au paysage et à l’Histoire de l’Ecosse, et à sa lutte identitaire contre l’envahisseur britannique. Enfin l’influence de ces racines se traduira par la présence implicite, en intertexte, de l’œuvre de Walter Scott dans ses romans prenant pour arrière-plan l’Histoire – même si celle de Dumas est également très importante.
