Extractions: Spinoza's first publication was The Principles of Descartes's Philosophy , in which he described the Cartesian system and began introducing his revised version of Descartes's metaphysics. In his second publication, the Tractatus Theologico Politicus , he expounded his radical ideas about revealed religion and his political philosophy. In this work Spinoza portrayed Judaism as a historical religion which made sense in ancient times, but which had now become obsolete. He denied the supernatural status of the Bible and raised basic questions about whether the text that we have is an accurate copy of what Moses and the prophets wrote or just an accumulation of ancient Hebrew writings. Spinoza insisted that the acceptance of biblical religion was a result of human superstition. Once people had accepted the 'new science', they would no longer believe in these stories. Events can be understood in purely scientific terms and need no active purposeful god to explain them. Human behaviour should be ordered by the essential moral message of the Bible and other religious and philosophical accounts, 'that the worship of God consists only in justice and charity, or love towards one's neighbour'. Spinoza also contended that religious groups have no political authority, but should only teach people to obey the moral and social order. These views were considered outrageous at the time, and the Tractatus was immediately banned, though it readily circulated in the Dutch Republic and soon in France, England and Germany as well.

Extractions: I find it to be a useful heuristic premise when approaching visual music composition to conceptualise the creative material to be given form as a kind of unified ether of raw perceptual information, manifesting itself as both sound and vision. This heuristic premise is similar to the monist philosophy that all existence is part of one all inclusive substance. This idea was originally espoused by Benedictus De Spinoza in his 17th century critique of the philosophy of Rene Descartes - itself an antecedent of modern positivist philosophy. Whilst there are also numerous differences, Spinoza's Monism may be seen to have more to do with various forms of Phenomenology, which are often seen to be more useful in forming art theories than the positivist philosophy of the natural sciences.

Hegel . From a Portuguese Jewish family that had fled to the relative tolerance of the Netherlands, one of the most famous things about Spinoza was his expulsion from the Dutch Jewish community. This is often called an "excommunication," though, as I used to have a high school teacher protest, there is really no such thing as "excommunication" in Judaism. Nevertheless, Spinoza was expelled from the Jewish community and anathematized. Although he is today recognized as one of the greatest Jewish philosophers ever, and the chief Rabbis of Israel have been petitioned to formally lift the curse upon him, this has not happened: Spinoza remains a controversial person in Judaism, for very much the same reasons that led to his expulsion in the first place. Spinoza's God is not the God of Abraham and Isaac, not a personal God at all, and his system provides no reason for the revelatory status of the Bible or the practice of Judaism, or of any religion, for that matter. HIS LIFE AND WORKS Spinoza was born in 1632 in Amsterdam of a Jewish family that had moved to the Netherlands from Portugal to escape persecution. He was given the Hebrew name "Baruch," meaning "blessed," which translates into the Latin as "Benedictus." He grew up in comfortfor his father was a prosperous merchant. But his mother died when he was only 6 years old. He attended a local Jewish school where he was taught a Hebrew curriculumfrom the Talmud, to mathematics, to Jewish mysticism. At age 11 his father diedand his stepsister laid claim to the entire family fortune. Thus Spinoza was on his own at an early age.
