Extractions: American Transcendentalism and/in Bulgarian Culture Albena Bakratcheva, Associate Professor Ph.D. In the process of spiritual emancipation which called forth the political change of 1989, the writings of the American transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau acquired a peculiar, hardly ever expected significance in Bulgaria. His social ideas and the spiritual horizons of his philosophy of life closely corresponded to the painful need of the individual in a so-called "socialist country" for outward and inward emancipation: a need most torturous for the intellectuals. So, if "there is hardly an ism of our times that has not attempted to adopt Thoreau," then it was the "anti-ism" to Bulgarian totalitarianism that provided most of the preconditions for Thoreau's reception in Bulgaria in the last communist decades and especially during our "velvet revolution" and immediately afterwards.

Extractions: BULGARIAN LITERATURE Bulgarian literature does not have a smooth and uninterrupted development. The most significant period in its history lasted four centuries. On the other hand, however, the most prminent representatives of the Bulgarian literature were often preachers, spiritual and revolutionary leaders, advocates of the National Liberation, freedom and democracy. Bulgarian literature is felt to be an integrative part of the building the national consciousness, confidence and dignity. In the Middle Ages Bulgarian literature had already had a history of over a thousand years. The eleventh-century jubilee was recently celebrated of the special alphabet, called Glagolisa, which was used for the translation of the Gospel into Slavic. In 863 the clergyman Constantine the Philosopher, whose secular name was Cyril , was assigned by the Byzantine authorities to spread the sacred Byzantine books to Moravia in the language of its native population. In 869 after Cyril's death, his brother Methodius continued his noble task. The alphabet named after Cyril was a later revision of

A process is accomplished between the two, which is similar to lighting a candle, where the flame of the first isn't transferred to the other but rather provokes it. Pencho Slaveykov Secondary School Number One 'Pencho Slaveykov' is a successor of the Sofia Classical School, which was founded one hundred and twenty-five years ago. This is the second secondary school in Bulgaria after the Aprilska secondary school. In the first years after the Liberation the famous Bulgarian scientist, historian and public figure Marin Drinov took the lead of the Department of Public Education and Ecclesiastic Affairs. He exerted great effort in reconstructing the existing schools and in recreating new ones. Marin Drinov opened Classical and comprehensive secondary schools in accomplishment of his plan for building the educational affairs in Bulgaria and to satisfy the need for people of higher education. "Temporary rules for high schools founded in 1878/1879 in Bulgaria Principality" were tested. The first clause claimed: "A secondary school has a purpose of giving general education to the students who have entered it and it has to prepare them for entering university, school of engineering and other specialized schools."

Extractions: OAK TPEE - Toughness, Protection, Longevity The Coat of Arms of the Republic of Bulgaria is a state symbol of the sovereignty and independence of the Bulgarian people and state. The Coat of Arms is a crowned rampant golden lion on a dark red background with the shape of a shield. Above the shield there is a crown modelled after the crowns of the kings of the Second Bulgarian kingdom, with five crosses and an additional cross on top. Two crowned rampant golden lions hold the shield from both sides, facing it. They stand upon two crossed oak branches with acorns. Under the shield, there is a white band lined with the three national colors. The band is placed across the ends of the branches and the phrase "Unity Produces Strength" is inscribed on it. The currency of Bulgaria is the Lev - or in the plural form, Leva. (In Bulgarian, "lev" is the old for lion.)The economy is stable and the value of the lev is tied to that of the Euro. As of June 2004, $1US was worth 1.6 Leva. Bulgaria remains a largely cash economy. Visitors should exchange cash at banks or change bureaus. Some change bureaus will charge commissions on both cash and travelers' check transactions which are either not clearly posted or posted in fine print. Beware of people on the street who offer high rates of exchange or who may ask you to make some change for them. These people are confidence tricksters who are very good at spotting non-Bulgarians and are intent on swindling the unwary traveler. Old, dirty or very worn bank notes may not accepted, and bills with "scotch tape" over any torn places will be refused.

Extractions: The territory of Bulgaria has been inhabited since the earliest historical times: the Stone Age and the Chalcolithic Age. The Bulgarian land reveals signs of human presence as far back as the end of the early Pal eolith (700 000 to 100 000 B.C.). Archaeological excavations have extracted from the entrails of Bulgarian land indisputable proofs of human life continuity - flint kernel items, blades, points and scrapers, fire and hunting traces have been discovered in many Bulgarian caves. Rich soil and favourable climatic conditions led to the emergence of arable farming and stock-breeding. This had marked future radical turn of the development of the human society. An early processing and use of the metals - copper, bronze alloys and gold has been proved by the discoveries in the north-eastern part of the country. The world oldest processed gold, dug out from Varna necropolis is just one of them.

Extractions: Although Tryavna is an old crafts' centre with no less than 140 listed buildings, it is not however a typical museum town, since its position on the mountain slopes has ensured its unspoiled beauty. The whole town exudes an air of the National Revival period. Wandering through the narrow streets one cannot help but notice the richly designed woodcarvings, which abound both inside and outside the houses. Besides the interesting exhibitions to be seen in the homes of National Revival figures such as Angel Kanchev, Petko and Pencho Slaveykov, is the Daskalov's House built in 1804, which has been turned into an ethnographic museum. The distinctive style of the 19th century Tryavna school can be viewed in the Museum of Icon Painting and Woodcarving, the architectural and historical ensembles The Old Square, P. R. Slaveikov street, Kachaunska neighbourhood and the place Tepavitsite, Skortsite village, the temples St. Archangel Michael and St. George. The Great Koprivshtitza Folklore Festival The Great Koprivshtitza Folklore Festival is Bulgaria's largest gathering of traditional musicians and singers and is a cross between a pop festival and a medieval fair. It is a sight that knows no equal: thousands of musicians and singers making the hillside above the picturesque village of Koprivshtitza their home for a few days. Coupled with this you have the colourful stalls of the traders and the thousands of visitors who come for the festival.

Extractions: This is one of the oldest towns not only in Bulgaria but also throughout Europe. Sofia is the fifth name of the town following Serdica, Ulpia Serdica, Sredetz, and Triaditza. There are data on Serdicas existence of 5,000 years ago, and the earliest written data for residents on the lands of Serdica date back to the middle of the first millennium BC. The history of todays city of Sofia started with the founding of the Thracian town of Sardonopolis. Serdica (the emphasis being on the last syllable) is the oldest name of the town we know. The name originates from Serdi one of the 22 Thracian tribes forming the numerous Thracian people. Located in the fertile Sofia valley, in the very centre of the Balkan Peninsula, on the strategic crossroads between East and West, the town was a much-attractive centre for many tribes and nations, travellers and conquerors. This was why it repeatedly experienced periods of upheaval and decay, but always managed to revive anew from the ashes like the Phoenix bird, even more magnificent and powerful.
