They must be keep complete, clean and in their original bindings out of the hands of juvenile owners. If I were to take a H. G. Wells Time Machine out for a spin, I would travel back in time and pick up some fine copies of stories and picture books that have never been in the hands of those juvenile owners. This observation applies to all literature, the older the book the less likely is it to survived intact so be careful with them. It is surprising how many have, in fact, withstood the ravages of time on the shelves of the book collectors, libraries, the antiquarian dealers book rooms, devouring pests, wars, divorce, and the invisible man. Rare books on natural history, specially written for children, seemed to have appeared during the last quarter of the 18th century. The natural History of Birds; Intended for the Amusement and Instruction of children in 1791, by Samuel Galton, who was a member of the Lunar Society, the scientific society which meet at Matthew Boulton's home, Soho House, now a museum open to the public in Birmingham, wrote the natural History of Quadrupeds for the Instruction of Young Persons followed in two volumes in 1801. Miss Priscilla Wakefield (1751-1832), wrote her famous book, The Juvenile Anecdotes (1795), which I believe was founded on fact was completed with a large folding hand-colored map of the world, and and later she came out with the Instinct Displayed (1811).

Children's Literature - Island 3 Anna Sewell (18201878), an invalid Quaker from East Anglia, is known only forone book, the perennial favorite Black Beauty, the Autobiography of a Horse http://www.sc.edu/library/spcoll/kidlit/kidlit/kidlit3.html
Extractions: Island 3: Mid-Century Developments - Some Women Writers and the Renascence of Wonder Anna Maria Hall Hall (1800-1881) was one of the most prolific Victorian writers for children, best known for such moral tales as Grandmamma's Pockets (1849) and for her editorship of the annual, the Juvenile Forget Me Not (1828-1837). Displayed here is her beautifully-produced giftbook Midsummer Eve: A Fairytale of Loving and Being Loved (London: J. C. Hotten, 1870). The magic lantern and Uncle Tom's Cabin Perhaps because of its strong story-line, clear morality, and the good central child character, Eva St. Clair, the American abolitionist novel Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (first serialized 1851-52) was soon pirated and abridged to become a children's classic. Although the book presents both African-American and white characters through melodrama and stereotype, the novel has received increasing critical reappraisal in recent years. Displayed here on a "sub-island" is a complete set of Victorian hand-painted glass slides of incidents from the novel, designed for an instructive magic-lantern presentation. Collection of Patrick Scott.

Following an accident as a child, Anna became crippled and experienced ill health most of her life. She got around by using horse-drawn carriages. Sewell's mother, a successful writer of juvenile fiction, allowed Sewell to edit her texts. "I never yet could make out why men are so fond of this sport; they often hurt themselves, often spoil good horses, and tear up the fields, and all for a hare, or a fox, or a stag, that they could get more easily some other way; but we are only horses, and don't know." ( Black Beauty Sewell began writing her first and only book, Black Beauty (1877), while bedridden. Told from the horses' perspective, Sewell wrote the book with hopes of changing the public's attitude about the cruelty that was regularly inflicted on horses at the time of the book's writing. "We call them dumb animals, and so they are, for they cannot tell us how they feel, but they do not suffer less because they have no words." (

Anna Sewell Black Beauty Search all of Anna Sewell Anna Sewell (1820 - 1878) , British writer of the Victorian era who wrote only one novel, the childrens classic Black Beauty . The story, written in first-person from the viewpoint of a horse, demonstrated the abuse many animals suffered during that time. Sewell was one of two children born to a Quaker family in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. She was very close to her mother, Mary Wright Sewell, who was active in many community service projects and the author of evangelical childrens books. Though educated mostly at home, Sewell briefly attended an outside school, which led to a life-changing event. Returning home from school at the age of 14, she fell in the rain and injured both ankles. These injuries left her an invalid. This not only kept Sewell at home for most of her life, but since what mobility she had was through horse-drawn carriages, it also sparked her love of horses and her interest in their humane treatment. Sewell never married or had any children, but she and her mother were kept busy by good works, such as teaching Sunday school and temperance activities. Sewell also began editing her mothers children books. Seeking treatments for Sewells injuries, mother and daughter traveled to several European spas. On these trips, Sewell s modest Quaker education was supplemented by meetings with artists, philosophers, and writers, including poet Alfred Tennyson.
