Additional resources Using Projective Techniques In Qualitative Research - 2 Hour Training CD-ROMs A 2 Hour Training CD-ROM (Video) For Use In Focus Groups And In-Depth Interviews For decades, the marketing community has been aware that there are emotional and psychodynamic factors that drive brand selection and loyalty. Even in today's price-sensitive economy, the imagery attached to brands goes far beyond product attributes, functional benefits and price to sell products. All products and brands develop personas in consumers' minds. All products/brands project varying user images, which differ by audience. Members of one audience may buy a product because it makes them feel affluent. Members of another, which values thrift, buy a brand because it makes them feel like smart shoppers. Taking this another step, consumers buy products with imagery that is either consistent with their positive view of themselves (Im sophisticated and therefore buy this type of wine to complete my image) or which conveys a plausible aspirational model - something they would like to be and believe they could conceivably achieve (I can be a real ladies man if I drive a sports car.).

Extractions: Chapter 4 Rise of Group Ability Testing: W.W.I; School Tracking; and Early Vocational Guidance (1918-1932). Paul F. Ballantyne This chapter covers two overlapping periods in which both the applied subdiscipline of mental and vocational testing, and the academic issue of the supposed hereditary origins of human intelligence became persistent features of the psychological and educational professions. Prior to World War I, psychometric ability testing was still in its infancy and was largely confined to rough clinical and applied settings. Binet-style individual mental tests, for instance, had been tentatively used in urban schools as a means of discovering either mentally unfit or gifted elementary or high school children. No organized program of group testing in either schools or in vocational settings had yet been worked out. Standardized group ability testing techniques would soon become a wider concern in military, academic, public school, and vocational settings. Chapter Overview In the first period (1918-1925), scientific racism was still openly condoned or at least acquiesced to by social scientists; especially by psychologists. Section one provides the details of the use of group testing techniques during World War I by Robert Yerkes, and others. During the war, the "Army Alpha and Beta tests" were developed and used to aid both the selection of officers and the assignment of inductees to specific military occupations or units. Specific attention is paid to the contrast between the practical military function of these tests and their more dubious post-war academic function (as psychometric exemplars for investigating latent intelligence). The shared additive nature of the underlying assumptions regarding human intellect in both contexts, however, is also noted.

The purpose of the profiles was stated as follows: In order to pay tribute to the men who have been leaders in the field of marketing, some years ago the American Marketing Association established a Committee on Biographies to run a series of statements on the pioneers in the field. In this series the Association honors the distinguished men of the past, and those of the present who are approaching retirement, who have contributed in an outstanding way to the thought and development of marketing. The purpose here is to introduce you to those pioneers and direct you to the essays and other resources related to them that are held in the Western Libraries. The citation for each orginal essay is provided and the Journal of Marketing is available in the Business Library. The essays were also reprinted - and in some cases updated - in a book that is also in the Business Library collection:
