His collections include The Book of Hours (1905) and The Duino Elegies Encyclopedia Rilke, Rainer Maria rÄ« nÉr m¤rÄ ¤ rÄl kÉ ) , 1875â1926, German poet, b. Prague, the greatest lyric poet of modern Germany. Life Rilke's youth at military and business school was not happy. His relations with his father were difficult, and he was able to attend the Univ. of Prague only with the help of an uncle. Married only briefly at the turn of the century, Rilke preferred an unsettled, wandering life among literary people; he was greatly influenced by his travels, notably by trips to Russia (1899, 1900). The sculptor Rodin , a close friend of Rilke who briefly employed him as secretary (1905â6), shaped the poet's career by introducing him to the craftsman's approach to creativity. After extensive travel in Italy, North Africa, and elsewhere, Rilke returned to Paris (1913), but World War I drove him back to Germany, where war service and chronic ill health frustrated his work. After 1919 he lived at Castle Muzot, in Valais canton, Switzerland. His death from a blood disease was hastened by the prick of a rose thorn.

Extractions: Books Links Rainer Maria Rilke was born in Prague on December 4, 1875, the only child of an unhappy marriage. Rilke's childhood was also unhappy; his parents placed him in military school with the desire that he become an officer a position Rilke was not inclined to hold. With the help of his uncle, who realized that Rilke was a highly gifted child, Rilke left the military academy and entered a German preparatory school. By the time he enrolled in Charles University in Prague in 1895, he knew that he would pursue a literary career: he had already published his first volume of poetry, Leben und Lieder, the previous year. At the turn of 1895-96, Rilke published his second collection, Larenopfer (Sacrifice to the Lares). A third collection, Traumgekrnt (Dream-Crowned) followed in 1896. That same year, Rilke decided to leave the university for Munich, Germany, and later made his first trip to Italy. When World War I broke out, Rilke was obliged to leave France and during the war he lived in Munich. In 1919 he went to Switzerland where he spent the last years of his life. It was here that he wrote his last two works, the Duino Elegies (1923) and the Sonnets to Orpheus (1923). He died of leukemia on December 29, 1926. At the time of his death his work was intensely admired by many leading European artists, but was almost unknown to the general reading public. His reputation has grown steadily since his death, and he has come to be universally regarded as a master of verse.

Extractions: In Paris in 1902, Rilke met the sculptor Auguste Rodin and was his secretary from 1905 to 1906. Rodin taught the poet to regard artistic work as a religious activity and to make his verse as consistent and complete as sculptures. The poems of this period appear in Neue Gedichte (New Poems, 2 vol., 1907-8). Until the outbreak of World War I, Rilke used Paris as his base, exploring Europe and parts of North Africa. From 1910 to 1912 he lived in Duino Castle near Trieste (now in Italy), where he wrote the poems making up The Life of the Virgin Mary (1913; trans. 1951), later set to music by the German-American composer Paul Hindemith, and the first two of the ten Duino Elegies (1923; trans. 1930).
