Ogden Nash? Gilbert? Dorothy Parker? Noel Coward? William McGonigall? Sample lines: "Marriage is the only way to save you from her clutches. You'll have your revenge on her by marrying the Duchess" As well as this performance, I also saw the Dress Rehearsal. The singing was generally good. I haven't seen Glanville before (she is a native of these parts) and was quite impressed, though at the Dress Rehearsal she fudged some of the fiddly bits in her opening number. This is a name to watch for. I thought her singing was even better, as it should be, on 9 January, but I wish she could convey anguish - and there's a lot to convey in this work - more effectively. She is quite tall. Davies has a sort of throttled tone which one has got used to over the years and there were some intonation lapses, but nothing serious. He still makes a convincing jeune premier - here wearing spectacles and corduroys - and conveyed well the character's distress in the latter part of the opera.

The standard dictionary of Older and Middle Scots, almost near completion, is the multivolume Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue (DOST). Mairi Robinsons The Concise Scots Dictonary (Aberdeen: Aberdeen University Press, 1985) is an excellent compact dictionary. For ease of reference, the recommended editions for writers and texts in this section are the most recently published, currently in print, or most readily available in libraries. Where such editions do not exist, reference is made to the earliest standard edition. As explained in the Introduction to these bibliographical sections, the reading suggestions offered here cannot be wholly comprehensive; for example, there is no scope to refer to general works on the Medieval and Renaissance periods in their wider European contexts, or to include citation of doctoral theses. Instead, the aim is to provide the reader with certain useful primary tools of reference.
