He passed the early part of his life in the army, from which he retired with the rank of Captain of Cavalry. Thenceforward he devoted him self to the arts, and was for many years considered one of the most enlightened connoisseurs of his time. His best productions are those executed in the style of Rembrandt. Bryan's Dictionary gives a list of his principal plates. Baldwin, Richard, Balfe, Michael William, Ball, Robert, Banim, John, Banim, Michael, Barber, Mary, Barker, Francis, M.D., a distinguished chemist and physician, was born in Waterford the latter part of the 18th century. He obtained his degree from the University of Dublin in 1793, and completed his medical education in Edinburgh, where he became intimate with Sir Walter Scott. Previous to the discovery of the voltaic battery, he suggested the identity of the nervous fluid with dynamical electricity. Returning to his native city, he practised for five years, and took part in the establishment of what has been said to be the first Irish fever hospital. Afterwards in Dublin, as a chemical lecturer, he became deservedly popular, and started the first medical journal in Ireland. In 1821, in conjunction with Dr. Cheyne, he published a treatise on Epidemic Fevers in Ireland, in two volumes; and in 1826 he edited the Dublin Pharmacopoeia. Until 1852 he continued Secretary of the Irish Board of Health. Judging by the omission of his name in Thorn's Directory for 1860, he probably died the previous year.

NextPaper TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION In the recent past there has been considerable activity in the use of the Web for publication of journals and in some instances of books [1-3]. In some areas indeed electronic publishing is taking over as the sole means of publishing, with some journals only available on the Web [4-6]. Electronic journals are, by definition, distributed to some or all of their subscribers in electronic form. This form of distribution facilitates communication in scholarly communities because of the speed at which material can be disseminated, and the considerably reduced costs involved. Whatever their nature (and putting aside the fact that much of what is available on the Web is trivia), Web documents do essentially constitute published material. The Web is the universal publishing medium, allowing anyone, for a small fee, to publish anything whatsoever. The issue under consideration here however is the electronic publication of academic books and journals as an alternative to publishing on paper.

Extractions: Alan Pulverness This is the text of a paper given at the Culture in ELT Seminar - Intercultural Materials in the Classroom and on the Web organised by the British Council at Kraków 23-25 January, 2004. In it Alan Pulverness addresses twelve major questions facing teachers who want to add this dimension to the learning materials they produce. Is intercultural awareness just a buzzword? What justification is there for attending to students own cultural context in teaching materials? Over the last 15 years or so, there has been an increasing trend in European education towards a concept of language across the curriculum, or at least cross-curricular approaches within the foreign language class. This tends to break down strict subject boundaries, so that the foreign language lesson can potentially embrace mathematics, history, geography, biology etc. and first language culture. In fact, a cross-curricular perspective creates the potential for foreign language teachers to take on a much broader and more satisfying identity, as educators, rather than merely foreign language trainers.

Paul Franklin came up with a few new angles in this one as Bill Elliott accompanies ole pal Cannonball Taylor to Independence to find the killer who dry gulched Cannonball's Dad. Meanwhile, the killer, Kenneth MacDonald, is making a cash deal to marry the only witness to the murder, young Mary Daily (in her only western of only two films total), with her family of brutal backwoods hillbillies (Uncle Frank LaRue - in a nasty as nails part completely unlike the kindly, elderly gentleman he usually plays - and his two sons Donald Curtis and Tom Moray). Naturally, sweet Mary is against the slimy plot as she loves headstrong young Stanley Brown. This otherwise good Elliott bogs down terribly at the midway point with a prolonged courtroom trial presided over by a cantankerous judge (Eddy Waller) and abetted by a objecting lawyer (Harrison Greene). Although he usually played heavies, as in this one, Donald Curtis (1915-1997) later became an ordained minister.

Many universities in Britain and abroad began life as associate colleges of the university, offering its degrees under licence. In recent years this aspect of the university's work has revived, because of globalisation, and an increasing number of overseas academic institutes offer University of London diplomas and degrees. The university at first comprised just two colleges, University College London (UCL) and King's College London (KCL), but now has over 15, many of which are major institutions in their own right. It will describe progress in manufacturing, products, services, and technology transfer in the high-Tc superconductivity field. As the field continues to mature, we will discuss issues of vital interest to many of our readers. Please send your contributions (product development information, news regarding technology transfer efforts, or any information you would like to share about your corporation or laboratory) to the editor. Technology News debuts on page 5. Oops, our mistake! In our last issue we listed a preprint by M. Rabinowitz (EPRI) and T. McMullen (Virginia Commonwealth), who have used a simple model to calculate Tc and its pressure dependence. The authors have informed us that their reported values of dTc/dP are the average values over the pressure ranges needed to achieve the maximum Tc in Hg-1201, Hg-1212, and Hg-1223. The calculated average values, which agree with the corresponding experimental values, should not have been compared with the larger initial pressure derivatives of Tc that have been measured at lower pressures.
