HOOVER'S CEMETERY Hoover's Cemetery, known also a Mount Hope, and Athens Cemetery, is on the north side of SR-14, about three-tenths of a mile east of 650E - a few hundred feet east of the town of Athens, Henry Township, Fulton County, Indiana. A sign at the entrance reads "Hoover Cemetery, 1891." Land for this cemetery was donated by Henry Hoover and William Rannells. William Rannells and his wife Susan were originally from Virginia, but removed to Ohio where they remained for some time before moving on to settle east of Athens, between Rochester and Akron, in Fulton Co., Ind. They brought with them a young slave girl, Fannie Rose, who died in 1855. She was buried in the Rannells family burial ground which was later made a part of Hoover's cemetery.

Extractions: On October 13, 1970, a case was filed in the Fulton Circuit Court, alleging that for more than ten years last past, there had been no elected, qualified and acting officers or directors of the company. Also that for more than 20 years last past, the First National Bank of Rochester, Rochester, Indiana, had acted as trustee of the funds of said company. Also, that the said mausoleum was in a state of extreme disrepair, and constituted a public nuisance and should be removed, requiring the reinterment of all bodies presently interred therein.

Extractions: By W. D. Floyd To get to this cemetery from Tryon, NC take East Howard St. which leaves US-176 at the traffic light at the City Hall. Follow E. Howard St. and find Grady Avenue going off to the left. Follow Grady Ave. and find Markham Road bearing off to the right. Follow Markham Road and the cemetery will be on your left. I started the survey June 18, 2001 and I started just to the right of the gate. I will call this Section # 1 and it is the part that stays between the driveway and the boundary of the cemetery. It goes completely around the cemetery. The survey was completed June 19, 2001. There are plenty of unmarked graves and some graves marked with fieldstones. There are lots of markers that are gone and some broken and down. The cemetery is pretty run down to be one kept up by the town of Tryon, NC. This is the worst kept of any that I have been in that the grass mowing and maintenance is provided by a town. Solesbee, Albert S. Nov 4, 1918 Oct 17, 1992
