Such Fas es became affordable and verypopular in the 1980s. They transfer one or a few printed or handwritten pages per minutein black-and-white (bitonal) at a resolution of 100x200 or 200x200 dots perinch. The transfer rate is 14.4 kilo bits per second (kbit/s) or higher. The transferred imageformats are called ITU-T (formerly CCITT ) Faz group 3 or 4. The most basic Faz mode transfers black and white only. The original page is scanned in a resolution of 1728 pixels /line and 1145 lines/page ( A4 ). Theresulting raw data is compressed using a modified Huffman code optimized for written text, achieving average compression factorsof around 20. Typically a page needs 10 s for transmission, instead of about 3 minutes for the same uncompressed raw data of1728×1145 bits at a speed of 9600 bit/s. The compression method uses a Huffman codebook for run lengths of black and white runsin a single scanned line, and it also uses the fact that two adjacent scanlines are usually quite similar, saving bandwidth byencoding only the differences. There are different Fex classes, including Class 1, Class 2 and Intel CAS.

Extractions: Contents List The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.

The movie "Cold Mountain" has given moviegoers new reason to complain about bungled or exaggerated Southern accents in Hollywood films. But I recently ran across a similar gripe voiced way back in 1897, about stage productions. The complainer was Thomas Nelson Page (1853-1922), whose extravagant writings did much to promote a moonlight-and-magnolia romanticizing of the Old South. From Page's 1897 book "Social Life in Old Virginia: Before the War"  (emphasis added): The Drama is one of the accepted modes of judging of passing life. It is assumed to be a reasonably true reflection of the life it pretends to portray. If this standard shall be accepted, what a life that must have been which existed in the South! The bloodhounds, brute and human, that chased delicate women for sport, have mainly been given up. But their place has been taken by a different species of barbarian if possible even more unreal than those they supplanted. Quite a large crop of so-called Southern plays, or at least plays in which Southerners have figured, has of late been introduced on the stage, and the supposititious Southerner is as absurd a creation as the wit of ignorance ever devised. The Southern girl is usually an underbred little provincial, whose chief characteristic is to say "reckon" and "real," with strong emphasis, in every other sentence.

Extractions: Subjects: Abstract: In the early years of the twentieth century, numerous Spanish doctors were in the forefront of a protofeminist sexual discourse that sought to replace moral doctrine with hygiene. But devoutly Catholic provincial families numbered in the millions, and they were the major repository of Spains military-hierarchical ethos and what Reich called the system of sexual dictatorship. The ineptitude of the Second Republic led to General Francos victory in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and for many decades thereafter the normative unfolding of Western medicalization was effectively stymied. This article examines the efforts of Francoist gynecologists to remove all traces of sexual communism from the women of Spain and to bring medical procedures into line with Church-sanctioned modes of truth production. As Foucault predicted, the most stubborn form of resistance to a modernizing medical subjectivity was found in the variety of folk medicine known as curanderismo Lehnhof, Kent Russell, 1970-
